If PR had a campaign...

Post by O.Ortega »

If PR had a campaign game mode what would you want for the story to be about? How would you like for the campaign to work? Feel free to post whatever character/plot/gameplay thoughts come to mind and don't think about what the battlefield 2 engine is capable of. Think about what you would enjoy and what you think would "fit" with PR.

I think that Insurgency and AAS should each have a campaign. My idea for a Insurgency campaign is for the MEC and US, along with Pakistan, to unite to eliminate terrorism in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The player is part of a experienced squad meant to work with Pakistan soldiers that are fresh from training and give them a crash course in fighting the terrorists. The player is not very tolerant of the Pakistani soldiers but is forced to work with them. The campaign would be a series of missions taking place from Pakistan to the North-Eastern edges of Afghanistan. Players must take time to recuperate if wounded after a mission and this means that they may miss certain missions but the operation against the terrorists continues without the player. After the campaign is over and the Taliban have been forced out of Afghanistan the player is kidnapped, along with a Pakistani soldier that he befriended, by Pakistani militants that wish to create the successors to the Taliban. The player escapes and kills the leader of the militants, breaking the militia.

I don't know what the AAS campaign would be about, though I think that it should also use the model of players having to recuperate if wounded during a mission.

I would mix AAS and INS all into the same campaign. The missions would be basically a multiplayer tutorial. You would learn to do everything, from flying to laying and marking mines. Leading squads to basic rifleman play. Destroying caches to building super fobs. I would have it played through both the eyes of BLUFOR and OPFOR. Lasing targets, calling in mortar strikes, properly using anti-tank, mines, ied's, grenade traps. You name it, it would be in the campaign. It would be a long *** campaign lol :)

I think that the campaign would be as follows:

-There's no storyline. The campaign exists of 4 missions in loop. No other maps/missions are played.

-Your air force is minding it's own business. Instead of being usefull as CAS, they just crash once in a while.

-You can't take a sniper rifle because getting your entire squad killed over and over again in the same place is the objective.

-Bots can see you through smoke and bushes. You're getting killed every 5 minute from a hipfiring sprinting bot 2km away.

-All missions consist of building 20 FOBs and dying. Kills are not important in PR.

-Half of the BOTs are not spawned in because they're OPFOR and regulary teamswitch.

The last mission ends with a crash to desktop.
Congratulations!
Now you can replay all 4 missions.

No campaign, just a tutorial for the lazyasses who can't read manual.

I could go the Tom Clancy doorstopper route, Asad Khal Skirmish -> Gaza Beach Inf -> Iron Ridge Std -> Kozelsk Std -> Gaza Beach Std INS -> Sbeneh Outskirts Std (tweaking to make Hamas the opposition to MEC) -> Bijar Canyons Alt -> Beruit Inf -> Jabal al Burj Std -> Beruit Lrg -> Bijar Canyons Lrg -> Iron Ridge Std INS -> Kashan Desert Std Vehicle Warfare -> Khamisiyah Alt -> Iron Ridge Inf CNC -> Assault on Mestia Skirmish -> Saaremaa Lrg -> Silent Eagle Std Veh Warfare...

I'll leave it to the reader to infer the storyline.
Players might be hardcoded, but that sure doesn't seem to stop anybody from trying.

The only winning move is not to play. Insurgency, that is.

I would take one of the massive maps, and set up scenario's on the map for each team. Flags in a sector of the map for a small skirmish, when the skirmish is completed you will be told to go to another area of the map hunting for caches, most of these commands would come from an AI commander who tells the squadleaders.

The best thing would be a multiplayer campaign like Red Orchestra you win a round and cap a territory, then set next territory to attack/defend.
Or a big online map like Heroes & General which evolve.

And this, probably a dream but a giant map like Battleground Europe. With commanders, generals, platoons etc... Units will have to use transports aircraft, stuff like that. But I don't think Project Reality can support and there aren't enough players

I wouldn't call it a campaign exactly, but a good long toturial would be great. Not that the manual isn't helpful but for people like me who can read the manual 10 times and still not fully understand everything. I'm the type that learns from actually doing the task instead of reading a manual, same with military manuals. Reading is one thing but doing it is another. I'm thinking of a long bootcamp kind of thing, like Americas Army did.

The campaigns I'll add will have lots of scripted events. To set the field, the game will be AI vs. AI everything goes, so expect everything to go as a normal game vs. AI. Don't worry about it as that's just the background scene to keep things intense. Your jobs will be very specific. You'll assigned to an AI scripted squad that will go around the AI vs. AI battles, by foot, trans land/sea/air. The specific locations on the map will be off limits to the rest of the AI on both sides. Those areas will be mainly scripted enemy movement that won't respawn once you kill them. You'll watch the AI vs. AI fighting hard, but the map won't finish until you complete all your objectives.

Each mission will have you play a different class, pretty much every class in the game, ever. You're not the same person in every mission, so you'll be on a different faction/military each mission with a new name. Lots of voice acting involved then. No Hollywoodized English VA from the non-English nations, they will dub native language with English subs.

Next the flight missions will be optional is they have a very high learning curve, but it will teach you in a way where you'll be on training wheels for awhile, so if you go too far with the stick/controller, it'll let you know that it's correcting you, so you don't die and have to restart every time. You'll then be asked if you're ready to go without training wheels and off you go.

Lastly, I'll add some really cool story progression so each mission is a different point of view of a major world war going on. Definitely making sure real emotions are going through my expensive voice actors, to get you attached to your squad brothers. Mostly serious chatter and pain, then once in awhile when it's quiet in the style of a good WWII movie when they just wanna chill and talk about sex, religion, or whatever. Each mission will be long, after all, it's PR.

I'm debating whether I should make your AI squad killable or not, or even make them permanently revive-able without dying. Squad Leader roles should be interesting, you'll be in a training camp instead of real warfare. Being taught by a seasoned general. For commander roles you'll be out in the field commanding a real AI vs. AI fight being trained by "You son of bith, I read your book" himself. Patton. Expensive, but it'll be worth it.

I think it would be awesome to have some different 'skirmishes' that are a lot more scripted than normal coop bots, but not necessairly a story-line campaign. The idea would be to have some archetypal missions like a convoy ambush, night mission, defending, attacking etc etc. The basic gist of the missions would be scripted but you would be able to choose how to tackle it: with any kit or vehicle available to the team. Some would more viable than others depending on the map and situation but there would be enough maps and scripted events to let each kit and vehicle be useful if used properly.

Would basically serve as 'practice maps' instead of a heavily guided story mode with voice actors yelling "RAMIREZ! Pick up that javelin!"

You could still give the missions more specific story and briefings on the scripted events passed as a tip-off from a spy or whatever. You could even link each story with persistent. characters but I would want all missions unlocked from the beginning. The difficulty would basically work on how effectively you can make a strategy to succeed instead of scaling up over a timeline.
