PR:Mumble Radio Filter?

Post by Bluedrake42 »

So. Here look I use this snazzy little plugin for Teamspeak. Basically all it does is overlay a basic EQ filter on people who talk. All you need is a highpass and gain boost to achieve a basic "radio" effect.

It really takes the immersion factor to the next level, and it always gets my viewers way more into everything. Very useful for the "cinematic" style videos I try and go for. Also... unlike ACRE, all this is is an audio effect. Not some crazy radio frequency bandwidth simulator or something, so it doesn't get in the way of gameplay.

My question is... would it be possible to create a similar audio filter for the Squad and Command VOIP channels in PRMumble? Nothing to get in the way of gameplay, just a simple cosmetic addition to the game VOIP. If I could find a way to implement something like that, I could see my videos having a much deeper impact on new viewers.

Here's a few examples of me using my Teamspeak plugin in various games. As you can see, it doesn't get in the way of voice coherence... its primarily just there for cosmetics if you will. Could be something I could see lots more people being interested in, especially as an optional addon to Project Reality. Perhaps a similar option to the radio bloops we put in when mumble became integrated.

oh dear, Bluedrake posting a suggestion outside of the suggestions forum, thought you might have learnt by now :p

As for the idea itself, I have no idea if its something we can do with our mumble or not but providing it didn't get in the way of communication I feel it would be a nice addition, especially to help tell when communication is over local or over radio :)

As long as you can choose on which channels to use it on i don't i see why not. For example I only use the audio cue on squad leader and commander, otherwise it's too spammy

I do the same with audio cue. I cant believe there are people using it on squad chat, so much spam would result in constant beeping :D We could just link the effect to the same setting as the audio cue. That being said, i dont think anyone on the team wants to touch PRMumble currently.

It's really a matter of personal preference isn't it? For me personally it would be great, cause it's a simple thing that just adds a lot to the immersion aspect.

The real question tho is: is it worth the trouble?

I have it, leading a squad and stuff, simply got used to it. Spam is not from that sound, its the people making it.

This would be awesome!
But this should only apply on the radio of the Squad(leader), not the local voice, so we can 'hear' very easily if someone is speaking locally or via the radio.

Some people's mics are terrible already. Altering the sound even a little bit could destroy things for them ;) .

So although it could potentially be a cool thing to have, nobody's going to touch Mumble.

I agree with AD, it would be a cool thing to have for immersion, but if everyone had good mics. Right now I can barely understand a lot of people because of their mics, mine included..

Some people have shitty microphones. They don't need a plugin lol

Is that really that big of a problem tho? Just make it an option, and make a shortcut to quickly turn it on and off ingame. If you run into someone in your squad who has a really bad mic, just turn it off. But again, even with bad mics, I don't think such an effect would make it that much worse.

Well no I mean... like if we could do it in game that would be swell and all, but I'm also asking if there would be a way to implement this as a plugin to mumble. Something third party that only I would use. I know this isn't something everyone would want, I just would like it for my video's sake. So I don't want everyone to think this is a Project Reality suggestion, if there's a way to do this third party please tell me.

Yeah that's how I would expect it to work.

Well of course, I wouldn't expect everyone to use it. Just the people who need that extra cinematic cosmetic edge either for videos, streaming or personal preference.

Edit: Also after looking at all this, it looks like I can edit the output of mumble to redirect through an audio filter... but unfortunately I think that will effect everything (including local speech.) Not sure if anyone has any ideas/pointers on that, it seems to be totally possible just have to figure out the right way to do it.

Surely it would be client-side? which means if you can't hear some guy just turn it off

Yeah its all client-side, technically I should be able to do this now if I can route it properly. Not sure if I'll be able to separate local from squad/officer chat which would be a shame however.

You'd need some sort of modification to mumble to allow it to output to multiple devices - no idea how hard this would be to implement. Considerably easier than coding the filters directly into mumble, but still I really doubt anyone will spend the time to implement it.

People in squads are constantly using squadVOIP to ask for medic, call out targets, ask for ammo instead of using localVOIP.

So for gameplay reasons I would really appreciate a filter effect like this. :)

This is a very cool suggestion, I'm amazed how Project Reality's radio chatter is not that real at all.
1- The radio sounds as the same as local. When 10 people talk at once You mix up things.
2- the radio sounds extremely clear as if soldiers are all carrying tablets connected to 3g with skype connections instead of actual radio equipment.
3- It can be optional like the radio cue.

Well, if it can be made optional, I support this suggestion. You can turn it on and when you encounter a squad mate with a bad mic you can then just turn it off. Should be made that you can do it while in-game though, somewhere through the mumble options, without having to restart the game to get to the launcher.

This may sound really far out but I've always wished that there was a certain kit that carried a radio that could talk to other kits in different squads. Like a kit called "Radio Operator" that could talk to other "Radio Operators" in different squads. Of course kits like pilot and crewman would also be able to talk on the radio as it is now.

The reason why I would like to see this is because as a infantry squad leader when you have 7 squad members constantly asking you what to do, where to go, giving callous and then you have 3 other squad leaders yelling over mics it gets really hard to even lead a squad and then I end up standing still trying to tell all these people what to do.

Half the time I'm talking over the radios and my squad is under fire with no directions and it turns into a blood bath. I think it would be easier if I could tell a squad member carrying a radio "Hey tell squad 3 that we are to their south and watch their fire" then I can go back to actually leading the squad in a combat scenario. It would take a little load off the stress of being SL.

That would make it even worse and will not be as effective.
First you'll have to tell that guy what to tell, then he has to tell the other squad leader, wait for a reply and tell you the exact same thing.

TBH the mumble chatter as a Squad Leader isn't really a problem. After a while you kinda get used to it and learn to listen just to what you need to know.

But for Vietnam, that would be realistic.
