PR vet thoughts on Squad
Everyone I have talked to ingame are excited about Squad. Why shouldn't we be? This awesome teamwork system on an upgraded engine essentially unchanged? That's awesome right?
I'm looking forward to it but I'm also not quite ready to completely commit. Some things have me worried. There are a few changes in mechanics that I don't think are necessary and will be even more unforgiving to new players than PR already is.
Also, since Squad is getting a bit of hype I'm also slightly worried about the playerbase. I guess it isn't much different than what all of you veterans were concerned with during the launch of 1.3.
Oh well, maybe I'm worrying for nothing. Anyway guys, please share your thoughts. I'm interested to know what the hardcore old timers think.

Re: PR vet thoughts on Squad
I am only excited about it. If they can build the same game without servers crashing every 3rd or 4th round, I think PR may actually have a contender. If not, there will always be PR. I don't think it's any different than any other new game.
I've been playing this game a long time, and I've seen lots of new players come and go. Really, the player base is the least of my concerns, so long as there are players to play the game.

Good point. I had completely forgot about stability. If squad gives a nice boost to server stability I'll be very happy and not worry about anything else. PR and squad both have my support.
Now if we can just get all those people that want to play squad into PR right now we can avoid a lot of misery come launch day.

I'm reserving this post to provide my full and detailed opinion on Squad after it's been in development for 10+ years like PR.
Honestly, I'm really excited for Squad though.

Re: PR vet thoughts on Squad
Eh Im pretty excited. There are a couple small things Id like to see done different, but for the most part looks like it will be a worthy successor to our old friend PR. The one thing that PR will always do better I believe though is probably map and faction diversity. Unless They end up making a bunch DLC later down the line for new theaters or whatever I dont see squad getting the 10+ factions and 45+ maps. Id be quite alright with squad having 4-6 factions on 6-12 maps. depending how much content each faction/map brings. I hope It makes most of our dreams of a PR successor come true, but to have every dream come true would be asking to much.
I also get what you mean about the new players who arent hardcore or experienced or whatever, but I believe they will stay and adapt if its their cup of tea and leave if not. Kinda like PR. Sure there will be steam sales where youll wanna stay off for a day or two, if you cant stand having a shitty game.

Sorry guys, but i am pessimist about Squad and especially for the future of BF2 Project Reality. The devs have put so much work on this mod that i can't believe all these efforts can be wipe in few months because of the release of Squad.

when i see 100 players in a server w/o lag...i will truly be excited. (has yet to happen)
when i see 100 players in combination w/ vehicles (air and ground) w/o lag then i will gladly hand them my wallet.
till then i will just watch and keep my money and my judgements to myself.

KillJoy, very apt name sir. I agree with you guys. It's kinda sad to see so many ready to bail yet many are being very patient. I would like to see Squad fulfill and surpass our expectations but I am not holding my breath either.
I don't get why everyone always wants something new and shiny anyway. Gameplay > graphics IMO.

Re: PR vet thoughts on Squad
I'm excited for squad as comcast my p.o.s. ISP isn't friendly to pr/bf2 servers. And I'd be able to play with no disconnects!!
But still gotta get a new PC. As I will pay full value for squad on full release. I'm also gonna wait a week or 2 after release. The kids/people who think it's BF4 will fizzle out. (Thank you Jack Frags for calling it a "sick new FPS"). As long as Frankieonpcin1080p doesn't upload a video on squad... we will be fine.
From the looks of squad... the devs are excited as well.

I have to agree with OP on this, I'm nervous for what it could do to the PR community, and as such I have no plans to pre-order. I could see it easily being a major disappointment, and my fear of it ending up like Insurgency did. (I.E., the vast majority of people play the game in a Call of Duty-esque manner.)
I want Squad to do well, but I can't say it will in today's era of modern PC gamers with the current userbase.

Does the movement speed in Squad bother anyone? Soldiers are still gliding around like they're on roller skates, even when moving over rugged terrain or up steep hills. That alone kind of kills the realism for me.

Re: PR vet thoughts on Squad
I Dont think you have to worry about it being like Insurgency. It might be like a modern more fleshed out version of RO2, with out all the dumb stuff like leveling. Might be an all right game like that, but yeah It would take a lot of time and money to get to the scale PR is currently.

Unfortunately i saw him in a playtest a few months ago. I've never been so happy the server kept crashing, i think he lost interest and left.matty1053 wrote:As long as Frankieonpcin1080p doesn't upload a video on squad... we will be fine.![]()

It'll be easier to be interested with more interesting factions and terrain. Taliban and US Army. Wow. Takistan/Afghanistan. That's really.. really boring. (Also hooray! Russians! Again!)
Let's see the PLA. Let's see Northern Europe. Let's see something, anything, that hasn't been beaten to death in dozens of games across a multitude of franchises. Squad's unique approach to teamwork will not set it aside in a poppy field of competitors in the same setting, if anything the higher barrier to entry will make it less likely to pick up steam.

Players might be hardcoded, but that sure doesn't seem to stop anybody from trying.
The only winning move is not to play. Insurgency, that is.

Re: PR vet thoughts on Squad
I just bought into the Alpha release mainly to see how my computer handles it and to give it a try. As it's only in pre-Alpha currently , I wouldn't try to judge the final release based on what you see on screen now. They have a LONG way to go but they're getting there.
As far as the player base goes..well..I have a wait and see attitude. I've had some phenomenal team oriented PR games in the past , and others where I felt like I was playing BF2 SP. It's going to be server / server admin dependent.

I agree with this. They could have done like Argentina vs Chile for a fresh vista that no one has been to. Or Canada vs US for the lols or Ukraine vs Russia to be edgy and maybe get themselves some free hype for being edgy. But at the end of the day this is still pre-alpha and people need to stop looking at it from a gameplay and mechanics perspective because those should all hopefully get more refined.mat552 wrote:It'll be easier to be interested with more interesting factions and terrain. It is. And if you want to be fair, compare Squad to PR minimod times, not 1.3.

Re: PR vet thoughts on Squad
Squad will take time to get to the right sweet spot. Even that sweet spot is debated in this community and has no clear coordinate. If you think you need to be heard I think the Squad forums are a good place to do it. Keep in mind it just begun and is in it's closed pre alpha stage. Which is the earliest software stage that an open project can be in and have coverage. Not saying it's too early to give feedback just saying there is so much more time ahead to get things right too. So don't panic or jump to conclusions.
Best thing you can do is express yourself as much as you can and give constructive feedback. Provide some solutions and suggestions where you think the game would actually be better. Being invested in many other crowdfunded projects I have seen this to be the best way to communicate your ideas with the developers and actually help the product.
