if you can, (for an extra ~100), go with a evga 760 instead, you'll play modern games at high easy

or a 750 ti for a few more bucks

lol, I would've bought parts the last time I posted on this thread but like 4 huge events occurred that burned my wallet up! (Literally!). I've been looking at the 750ti too... I'm hopefully going to be purchasing parts by the end of this month... but I have eyes on sales also on newegg and other stores.

@steeps This thread was originally for intel vs amd CPU. I'm more likley to purchase a Intel CPU now rather than a AMD (Unless I recieve an AMD one for free or a combo deal that's very worth it!). I still take suggestions for processors though. If more games actually utilized 6+ cores I'd look into a AMD CPU greatly.

@Massive Thank you! Yeah I've been kinda debating between the "K" version and non k version... I'm not planning to OC much so I'll stick with the "normal" version for now. In the future I'll upgrade probably (About 2 years or so, depends on what components). I'm not careful about graphics much. I'll play on Medium and get a good solid 60+ and I'll have no problem!

@Tackle yeah, I'm not really gonna go into the "next gen" age of RAM yet. I'll think of upgrading to it when it gets to a cheaper price. I've heard pretty much only good reviews of AMD/ATI Cards. Got a friend that has a r9 290 and he can run a TON of games on high.

@plodd Yup I plan on going over for the PSU. I am gonna try to stay with the 500w-700w range though. But I think a 600w will be perfect for a "normal" gaming rig.

Anyways, I kind of plan to spend roughly: $500-$700. I'll buy parts soon... starting with the Case probably. Hopefully nothing pops up the next 4 months and I can finally get the darn PC built.

I have just built a cheap system based round a second-Hand 2500k and P8z68 mobo, my case is an old but good thing when it was new.
My only big expense was a 970, but in retrospect I think a 750ti would have been enough for HD especially as my supplier are doing a good price to clear them for the 900 series. I assume there will be a 950 soon.

I am delighted except PSU, and am replaying an old game as it looks so nice now.

I think it's a great price, (that's just me though). $600 for a PC that probably will last me a year until I can find a better paying job... Will upgrade for sure in the next year or two though. But I think this is a good build. I don't think I'll do any OC at all.

I don't know if the thermal paste is necessary for increasing the life of my cpu.

I am not sure about the case fan either, but I don't want anything getting too hot!

paste is okay, i'm sure intel provides their own paste too, but i don't recall

you don't need an extra fan, nor do you need a CPU cooler unless you plan on doing OCing (which i doubt you will do with a non K) I have the same case, cooling isnt an issue. i also run stock CPU fan for my i7 4770k (no OC)

I would look into getting a solid state drive in addition to your hard drive. those things are incredible.

other than that, solid build.

if i were you.. i would save until you get around ~1k.. you'll have enough to build a monster that will last you at least 2 or 3 years. its better to save and wait then buy with $600 IMO..

Thermal paste is absolutely a must. Dont forget that. If you never applied it to a CPU see some tutorial videos across the web.

Build is solid and upgrade ready. Anytime you wish or have the cash you can throw an SSD in or replace the CPU or GPU. I would keep that fan in the list just in case I choose to OC any future CPU i get.

I think I can run most games well on this system. Arma 3, GTA V, Squad.

I'm planning on spending a bit to upgrade it probably next year at this time (November)

i would invest in an anti static wrist band or mat to work on if you are super unsure, probably overkill, but its a good safety measure

Intel processors are cheaper in the long run if you take into account that they run cooler, draw less power and therefor will last much longer than AMD's frying pans of certain death.

Yes I was thinking about the anti static stuff. I'll spend a lot of time building it just for safety!


My PC is not going to be sitting on carpet though, it will be on wood flooring. The room it's in, it stays very cool during the nights, and the floor is always freezing lol. (Since there is no insulation underneath). Got a battery backup just in case, and... I think I might be good to go.

ONE LAST QUESTION, then I'll order...

Do I NEED a CPU cooler? I'm not going to overclock this cpu.

if you're using the OEM heatsync you don't need to worry about thermal paste either --- the ceramic-silica pads they come with are better and logner lasting than most pastes

you've chosen a good piece of kit, I run similar for my wife's machine albeit an i3-4170

when you're building all you need to do, is whenever you pickup a component - touch the metal bracket/IO shielding first --- and touch the case at the same time when installing the parts -- for RAM never touch any of it except the outside edges this is the only real static sensitive part (if it has a heatspreader/shield you can touch it all over apart from the pins

Yes, the paste already on the processors from Intel works very well.

Matty, may I suggest an update though for that 750 Ti? The GTX 950 is the same price and performs better.

Oh Arma3 is a *****. Dont expect wonders, but I dont know what your previous build was, so it might be significant bump, and if you had some low end gpu you will unlock ultra setting for textures in video options. Just dont push settnigs too high, cause what I said in first sentence. ;-P
