trying to fix startup close
Hey all. Recently upgraded to 10 and I'm having the same issue as everyone else: the game closes at startup.
I've tried to do the proposed fix, which is get Direct X, Visual Studio, and framework. Here is where things get a little fuzzy for me.
Direct X: I have not found an actual link for a Windows 10 direct X. Everything takes me to the "Upgrade To Windows 10" page. I tried to manually download DX9 and it isn't supported on this OS. My system says it has DX 12, and I installed the "Graphics Tools" add on so I'm really not sure what to do here.
Visual Studio: when I attempted to run "Multibyte MFC Library for Visual Studio 2013", it would not allow me to install this because it said I do not have Visual Studio. I have VS 2015 sooooo this is confusing me.
NET Framework: I'm good here.

Man this is such a bummer. I tried again with your links. same deal.
Is there a particular file path that PR searches to find the Direct X files? Maybe I'm not installing in the right spot?

Can you try this link?
Download DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) from Official Microsoft Download Center
Download and make a temp file on desktop, it will extract there.. then you open it and install.
Are you able to install it? If so, any changes? Try launching game??

Yeah I did that and I'm still crashing. I even tried installing my original BF2 game to see if the drivers it installs would fix it --- still no dice. I have no idea what else I'm supposed to do here other than smash my head through my desk in frustrationDC_K wrote:Can you try this link?

so I tried installing GTA 5 and it tripped up on installing the visual C++ section. I'm thinking that's the issue.

Even if you are not in a homegroup, go to control panel, go to homegroup, create a homegroup, make everything available, restart, go back to the homegroup menu, disable all entries and leave the homegroup.

Re: trying to fix startup close
I had same problem but I think I solved it.
I found out that OneDrive permission keep resetting itself is because I have Homegroup network. My other computer without HomeGroup network doesn't have this problem. Once it's set, the permission doesn't change back.
So, for those with Homegroup network, you'll find in Sharing tab of folder properties 2 entries: one is Homegroup and the other is the owner.
Just change the permission level of Homegroup to Read/Write instead of Read only.
Also in my settings, OneDrive is owned by my userid, with SYSTEM, ADMINISTRATORS, and Homeusers have all FULL CONTROL.
I realized that permission kept resetting is because my computer is considered to be part of Homegroup network, which only has Read-only access.
If you want to check if it works or not, just right click inside OneDrive folder, choose NEW. IF you only see FOLDER, then it's read-only. If it shows other file types, then it's solved.
I've been resetting my computer a few times and working with files inside OneDrive and I haven't encountered OneDrive problem yet.

I had same problem but I think I solved it. However, my problem is that I couldn't save to OneDrive folders. Other than that, I can save.

In short, if you use Homegroup network, make sure that Sharing is Read+Write. If you don't, just remove your Homegroup network. Or use Workgroup instead. And yes, I'm using MS Account.

Re: trying to fix startup close
Looks like a problem with your profile. It says you have it set to
which is odd - the 30Hz part, and then the error says unkown display mode 1768 x 992 @ 60 Hz?
Check again your video settings, it should not be set to 30 Hz unless you have some odd non common monitor. Seems that there is a lot of these issues lately and it is somehow related to profile entries, or specifi video.con file, so check if it exists in
Additionaly check if these directories are not set to "Read Only" by right clicking and selecting "Properties", and if so uncheck "Read Only" and hit "Apply" on "Ok". Dont stop here and recheck every file in subfolders "Default" and "0001", "0002" etc in the same way, especially the "Video.con" file.
Open Video.con file in each of these directories and inspect their content looking specifically for this line
which is example of mine "Default > Video.con" file line and make sure there are no blank spaces where not needed. Set your monitor native resolution here in proper form as shown above, save and exit, check again f file is not read only.
After checking all this try to launch PR without touching settings. If by some chance you ommit to do anything of the mentioned it may not work, or in case you are missing any of the folders or files in the "Profiles" directory it may not work as intended.
Why resolution of 1768x992? Are you trying to run it in FHD resolution and it fails for some reaosn or what is it, cause I dont know any monitors that have this as native resolution. This looks like a weird TV set resolution so are you running it on TV? See your TV manual and check its refresh rate ( 30/60/120Hz or anything similar ) or tell us the model and make of it so we can look it up.

So apparently I don't have a PR folder under my documents section? Should there be a folder there? I searched for all PR folders on this PC and there are none that have a "profile" subfolder. I've installed this three times so maybe I'm doing something wrong?
On the resolution -- I have the computer set up through a TV, and this setting seems to be the only setting that appropriately aligns the borders. For some weird reason though, the resolution has no setting for 60hz. I tried customizing it to 60 hz with this resolution but it will not stay beyond me "testing" the settings. I dunno why that is.

Unless you have manually disabled your Windows pagefile through your control panel, via the advanced settings tab and performance options, it should already have been set to "system managed size" by automation post installation.fetuslord wrote:Page File: 2.38 GB

Re: trying to fix startup close
That is the issue. WHen PR launches its looking for that folder and read the data, so if its missing it will fail to start and close. Look again at th eimag ebelow you shoul have ProjectReality folder in Documents folder:fetuslord wrote:So apparently I don't have a PR folder under my documents section? If you are missing config files in Documents it will behave weird so weird errors are to be expected. On the resolution -- I have the computer set up through a TV, and this setting seems to be the only setting that appropriately aligns the borders. Check again for the folder and if you are missing it, and you havent deleted it, something is very wrong either by the installer of PR or with your system.
If so, at this point we might try to add the ProjectReality folder in Documents folder manually and see what happens, or try the longer path and reinstall PR and verifying if ISO you have is not damaged and if you have proper Read/Write permissions on Documents folder.
Note on page file issue: if you dont know what page file is and have never worked anything on your system about it, its set to auto or System managed so let it go for now.

Re: trying to fix startup close
I'm about to respond but I think I've found the issue with your help.
I think Windows 10 automatically saves documents through One Drive and not locally. I located files for my other downloaded games in my one drive documents ---- so I'm gonna try and make it save locally and see what happens. Also my documents folder was set to read only.
