This thread is flame bait, Frontliner is on his toes. I think the point of many of us having knee-jerk reactions is valid, beyond that this thread is just a pleasant trip down troll lane.

This thread does raise a valid point though, and that is the game itself does nothing to help new players. There's basically no ingame tutorial, or anything pointing to the manual/server rules etc. Maybe that could be something worth for devs to look into?

EDIT: I can see the launcher being extremely useful for this, maybe a little "hello, it seems it's your first time playing PR! here read this." Or something along those lines.

No, there's a manual, just below the "play" button. The problem is not the community,it's the new players. They think it's just a free battlefield 2 with more things. When I started the game it was 1.21 and the first thing I did, was reading the manual while downloading.

PR is a great game, and a tutorial would take to long to go through. If you don't want to read, then watch videos, but don't ruin players experience by doing stupid things.

You know the manual exist, then go find it yourself, it shouldn't be that hard.

Mostly what I was thinking is that it needs to be more "in your face" about how hard the game is to play.
Also "Manual" doesn't really imply much anyway. But I guess you're right, kids nowadays expect every game to play the same, which is a shame in my opinion.

EDIT: I guess I was using myself as an example, if a game tells me to read the manual, I'll probably do it. But if it just says something like, oh there's a manual here btw. Then I'll prob not bother reading it.

The whole "Read the manual" suggestion towards every question asked by a newcomer on a server, doesn't make me put further more faith in to a newbie carrying a specialist kit in my squad. Don't get me wrong, as brilliantly scripted and laid out as the manual for Project Reality is. I can't say I once glazed an eye over it, unless you're Rain Man, chances of you remembering how to adjust the range of your LAT or calling for an area attack when called upon to do so are low. My advice to any newcomer to PR is just to simply listen, always ask questions and stick with your squad. Don't take any assets until you're comfortable knowing the basics of the game (consistently being an effective member of an infantry squad). Respect the learning and teaching aspect of PR otherwise you'll turn in to one of these experienced clowns who turn upon newcomers when they make a slight mistake and cause more damage then good to the community.

People could also choose to be different and explain things to people? I happen to think that the PR community is different from many other communities, and I think it's a giant unwritten rule in this community to be friendly towards new players. When I still actively played PR there was a real friendly atmosphere among players, not the type of thing you describe here. If you have players flaming other players for any reason that is the beginning of the end. Just as much as experienced players think they are entitled to tell new players to suck it up so do the veterans. That is how I experienced it always anyway.

Let's look at the BF3 community for instance, and compare it with the PR one. Has anyone here ever visited their forums and witnessed the **** people over there say to each other? There was even a guy saying that people without Premium were Untermenschen. Not only their badly moderated forums were filled with this sort of ****, even in-game that **** could be seen all over the place. That to me is a major game-breaker, and the fact that it doesn't really happen over here is the reason why I like this community and PR so much. Most of the players are mature, and at the same time friendly enough to allow others in. I also don't see too many really rude replies here, at least when I browse through here.

All I want to say is that in my opinion just because it seems to be common practice for people nowadays to badmouth people when they feel like it, this again is about attitude. I rather teach people things than put on my drill instructor hat and shout at people. I guess I am a real oldschool gamer, because to me this is still a game with quite a steep learning curve and no one will learn anything when all other players do is shout at new players.

Just my thoughts everyone. Not meant as a stab to anyone.

Yeah i share your opinion, me personally i would also prefer to be newbfriendly as i have always been. But u have to understand thats not how it is right now.
I have been playing so many games last years, let me give you a example, if u play CS:GO and ur a newb, believe me man nobody wants to learn you any sh*t, you will just get votekicked. Example: league of legends, even if your a challenger and playing with your smurf on low elo account for example silver or gold. Make 1 bad play, and people tend to call you the biggest noob ever already feeder, noob, kid, nerd, flamer & whiner whatever.. The only thing i want to say is, flaming & nerdrage is not something specific for PR, every game has it on his own way. Only difference is in PR everyone has comms, you will hear the whine and flaming in your face and since there is always a admin online, mistakes can cost you a kick/ban

As long as you tell everyone and their mother that you are new, you will get helped. This is the only way the difference between noob and griefer/******* can be noticed. Just speak up and let people know. 99% of the PR players will then calm down after the first ''GET THE FUCK OUT'' and explain you what is going on.

this is very true, i've been playing for about 3 years now, when i was new i read the manual, but there were still things unclear for me, so i just hopped in a squad and explained that i was new, and i got help from all sides.
you should've seen the community a couple months back with the release of 1.3 , player count went from 300 to 800-1000 , yes the games weren't as epic as they were , but everyone gave the newcomers time, people opened up noob friendly squads for months just to teach.

the community of PR is one of the best you'll ever find, but it's like a family, you can't just walk in without explanation, you need to know the culture and explain that you are new.

I had a great time playing yesterday, the first time I played PR since the BF2 mod days many many years ago.. I played several co-op matches and 2 PvP battles, more should play I agree..

The game is still awesome, one of the best I have EVER played. The only even remotely hostile comment I received was when a tank was abandoned and I jumped in and did some firing on enemy positions. My squadleader said get out of that tank if you are in my infantry squad, go join the tank squad if you want to do that. He also said that it is considered asset stealing and we dont play that shit. He was right and explained it, end of story.

Just like in reality you have to follow orders, some cannot handle this what so ever. The squad leaders have more information than you do, the commander has the overall picture and coordinates everything. This is the same as reality, it certainly takes a mature and humble character to be patient and follow orders. If you struggle with it create your own squad and ask the commander for a simple clear objective that allows you more decisions or flexibility.

I think this aspect of the game and being more realistic, is what makes it one of the best games.. A couple of the battles I only got a few kills, but I supported my squad with ammo resupply and suppressing fire, and spotting enemies, and capping areas, and building FOBS, and scouting for good positions, or just defending.

It was tons of fun and everyone was great to me, people went out of their way to help me and give me suggestions and transport, they did not even give me too much shit when I killed a friendly with a grenade like a total noob.. :-D

To start out let me say I've been playing PR since 0.87 I think, so I'd like to think I know the whats and what nots. There definitely are some players that feel like they're entitled due to their experience and general knowledge of the game. Fortunately that's a small minority of players in general. Obviously this depends on the situation too, but recently I've had a couple annoying instances where players and admins need to act like complete dicks to get their little power kick satisfied. This mostly happens when assets (and asset whores) are concerned.

In the first instance I was playing Lashkar Valley as insurgent and I spawned in to main. The main base is up on a hill with a twisted road down and it would've probably taken like 10 minutes to the nearest cache. There was a 50cal techie in the main that I wasn't gonna use that. Instead I'd wait until someone spawns in to drive it so I can gun it or someone else comes back with their vehicle and give me a ride. So some 2 guys came back with SPG techie and I hopped in, because there's 3 free seats and no other way to get out of main so why not.
As soon as I hopped in, these 2 guys that I'm not gonna mention start screaming "Get out! Get out! GET THE FUCK OUT!". I asked them why (in chat) and they start reporting me for everything they could so I was like fuck you and shot them (and hit the gunner) as they were driving away because fuck them and their entitled ownership of that particular vehicle. So I just solod that last 50cal techie in the area and told everybody about it, and got admin killed, but at least that part makes sense, so I don't blame no admin (I think I had played with that admin before together, so he might've recognized me). And they think they're on to some form of teamwork with that SPG.

It's these types of asset whores that are worst types of players on PR. Too good for inf and in cases when they're on a side with no assets, they switch side or switch server.

The second instance was today, when I got banned on =HOG= server by admin called =HOG= Jevkins or something and he just couldn't hold back his full-on puberty.
I joined the server with about 30 people on it, so in those seeding stages the game is usually pretty random, mostly new players being wild and generally the whole team doing all kinds of random stuff. Anyways it was Fallujah and our whole squad was in main with no transport, but there were 2 APCs in main with 1 locked 2 man APC squad out on the map. Our squad leader decided we're gonna take the APC and get down to the cache. I could tell he was probably a bit newer player than I was (also in on some random shit), but so what he grabbed the crewman kit as a driver and told everybody to get in. Mech INF squad isn't anything new so I grabbed a crewman kit and became the gunner and we fit the whole squad in there.
Fast forward until we were at about 200m range of the cache, the squad had cleared out a T-building just next to us and I was a gunner in the APC waiting until the driver gets back in and we move down to the cache. It was pretty quiet moment, me just telling our squad to get in the APC to move down when this cute little admin joins to the squad TRIGGERED (just joined the server and probably had no understanding of the current set of the round) and starts SCREAMING "CARLITO GET THAT FUCKING APC TO THE MAIN NOW!" I was like, what? hold on let me just explain it to you for a second "I DON'T FUCKING CARE THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS MECH INF lalala GET IT BACK TO BASE OR I'M GONNA FUCKING BAN YOU", so I tried to keep my integrity and told him to go fuck himself. I was probably get banned anyways but I wasn't gonna submit to this miserable man-child trying to act as if his admin status make up for his ***** attitude and lack of reason and social intelligence. I'm a fucking adult and I'm not gonna let this admin with his **** attitude of major proportions think this how you get people to do things.

I would've gladly returned the APC if he explained to me like a normal guy would, that you should take this vehicle back to base, these are the rules and APC squad needs his APCs and you can co-ordinate with them if you need it. Seconds before I got banned another one of my squadmates told the admin he was taking it out of proportion, hopping in so randomly and not even understanding what was going on. Later if I googled "hog project reality" to see if I have a chance of unban, I noticed Bluedrake's video of Admin corruption & =HOG= ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-5vC1YfoVs ), in which he generally explains admins, prominently =HOG= admins bullying players and abusing their admin powers just to stay on top of the situations and realized I don't even wanna be unbanned from there. Why? Just to reinforce the server in which flawed admin culture has been encouraged for a couple years now? I'd rather bring out their bullshit in every case I can until the server falls off and people find a better one.

I really never had problems with that server before this but then again I never came in hand-to-hand (or rather voice-to-voice) contact with an admin either.

OP, some in game and even in this thread seem to feel they are so called "vets" of the "game" and like to hold a "superiority" attitude instead of just being cool and helpful. it's, "read the rules" stay away from assets, yada, yada, yada..

I stopped playing a year ago after playing since .85..servers/players have pretty much ruined the game for the most part. sure, maybe few and far between you might find a "welcoming" squad or server but as I said, it's few and far between. I also agree, even though you are new to the "game" you are observant and pretty much on point as to why the numbers are low..shitty attitudes, a whole bunch of shitty attitudes
