Thanks a lot for all of your advice gentlemen! :D

Mats391, that is some good thinking there. I like the idea of having both the benches and the canvas top as child objects of one and the same standard truck model. Considering Rhino's feedback I think that would be the best approach.

Also, I will just forget about the machine guns and focus on the regular versions now. I have been thinking about the way they would influence gameplay myself as well, but I figured that as long as the DEV's wouldn't have any problems with the MG's it would be a cool thing to have. Now Rhino doesn't think it would be such a good idea at all and also since I am starting to more and more realize the extra amount of work it would bring, so now I am convinced it would be better to just leave the MG's away as well.

So I figured it would be nice for ya'll to be able to take a good look on the actuall 3D model,

truck (View in 3D)

This is my first time using p3d, I had to remove the smoothing in p3d since it was rather fucked up at some parts on the model.

I might share a new and better upload with you guys later on.

Hello,

I was wondering if there is any tutorial for the UVW Unwrap modifier for project reality. I have found a couple of tutorials on YouTube already but I would like to know if there are things I have to keep in mind when using this modifier for a model that will end up in game. Like when I was busy modeling I couldn't just go and use every single tool / modifier I wanted to since some of them cause problems with PR/BF2.

So is there maybe a tutorial or anything like that for this and is there anything I have to know before starting with the UVW modifier?

PR is no Different UV wise. Just keep in mind 1p and 3p textures.

Okay good!

I curently actualy have a separate file for both the 1st and 3rd Person model so that means both will get a separate UV sheet as well.

I am getting the 3rd person model ready for UV mapping, this is what I have at the moment:

Image

But there is a problem with the canvas top and I am not quite sure how I should solve it. There seems to be z-fighting of some kind:

Image

As you can see the diagonal line that runs from the vertex in the lower left corner to the vertex in the upper right corner on the inside of the canvas is visible on the outside as well. (z-fighting?) Right now my canvas is 3D, unlike the windows on my truck which are 2D.

Should I go make the canvas thicker or should I make it 2D? Or isn't this actually a problem at all but just 3DS max derping around?

Also, the canvas top isn't finished yet so that's why it still needs some more details.

Kind regards,

Dj.

Edit: No, the plains are not on the same spot, just kinda close to eachother

That wont z-fight. As those are one sided planes, you wont be able to see the inside wall even if it pops through the outside one.

The 3rd Person model is ready for UV mapping:

I am not quite sure if the smoothing groups on the canvas top are okay the way they are right now. The problem is that 3DS max 9 is smoothing lines that will be there in triangle mode, but not in poly mode. Also, flat area's don't need smoothing, but I do want to smooth the edges which I chamfered so I have to assign a smoothing group for the flat area's on the the front and sides to. I would like to hear you guy's opinion on this.

When using the render tool it looks better though:

Also, the anti aliasing improves a lot...

Thanks AfterDune. :-)

Some more progress... I decided it would be good for the infantry in the back of the truck to have something to look at. So I modeled a new 'side panel'. Also I have done some optimization and made a couple of renders for you guys to look at.

Reality:

The model:

And an overlook, including the current tri-count.

The cargo bay is still pretty low detail, as a matter of fact the cargobay on my 1st person model is exactly the same as the one on the 3 person model except for the new side panels. The seats and such don't have to be more detailed then they are right now I think but I am considering redoing the main canvas tube frame. I am just not sure yet if it's worth it, adding a couple more sides to it.

Current situation:

Some ''progress''

Image

Right now I am busy familiarising myself with the UVW unwrap modifier. I made a simple object (rocket) and made a UV map for it:

Image

Check:

Image

Not really good huehue. :|

So I opened the UVW unwrap modifier and broke the model into ''pieces'', flattened and relaxed them and now I have this:

Image

Image

It is something but as you can see the nose has issues:

Image

This is what I get whet when I flatten it, but what I want to end up with is something like this:

Image

Right now it would be pretty much impossible to put some text on the nose I immagine since the UV shows the nose in 4 separate parts.

I have watched this tutorial on youtube:

The guy uses a tool where he 'cuts' his model into pieces. I need some sort of tool like that to do my rocket's nose. I suppose it is in 3DS max 9 to but I haven't found it yet. Some help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Hehehe yes it is, I was hoping it would be relatively easy though.

I have a much less complicated WIP model for the Dutch Faction which needs UV-maps to, so I might as well finish that model first and do the truck afterwards.

I will make a new topic soon... 8)

Hi,

Atm I am starting with the DAF's UV sheets. But I am wondering what res I should use for the main 3rd Person body without the wheels, canvas top and seats. 2056 x 2056?
