help with parts
Hi
I'd like the cannibalize as much of my computer as possible, but basically I need a new CPU and MOBO
Can you recommend a couple for me to look into? I don't have all the money in the world, Budget is about 200 euros. and some places dont ship to Ireland, but don't worry, if you give me names, or webpages, i can find a way.
I just want to jump to the current generation of CPU sockets, that's my primary concern, so if getting a mobo first and then a cpu second is the best way to go, i can do that too. but i do need the guiding hand of an experienced tech guy.
intel core 2 quad q9450
nvidia geforce gtx 970 msi gaming 4GB edition
Asus P5Q3 deluxe
Corsair TX750W power assembly
Xigmatek Dark Knight S1283 H.D.T. CPU Cooler
Antec Nine Hundred chassis
Incidentally these parts were great, i ran the shit out of this rig for about 12 hours a day everyday for about 8 years, nothing ever broke. Fans all set to high, overclocked, smoking hot gaming rig for years.

https://www.amazon.com/MSI-970-GAMING-D ... aming+mobo
https://www.amazon.com/Intel-Quad-core- ... el+core+i7
would these fit together? (also would my heat sync fit on them?)
Game debate says its nearly 60%better than my current cpu

Why would you buy such an old CPU?

Re: help with parts
Nope , that is a AMD mainboard ! you need a INTEL 1366 socket mainboard for that CPU , but unfortunately they are very expensive (at least 2x more than 1155 or 1150 sockets)Psyko wrote:https://www.amazon.com/MSI-970-GAMING-D ... aming+mobo

So instead of that , I'll recommend this combo for you :
i5 2500K >> a second generation quad core with unlocked multiplier that can easily reach 4.0Ghz on your heatsink

ASUS P8Z68-V PRO Motherboard >> Overclock-able !

Re: help with parts
I have a 2500k and whilst a great CPU and only 10% slower than a current chip the problem is mobo availability - the only mobo that is on sale without going strange Amazon marketplace or China is an old *** H61 with no SATA 3, USB 3 or overclocking.
The only place that had a Z is newegg in the US. I am not quite sure what a refurbished mobo really is, my only guess is it's a x broken one with the broken part replaced probably in a Chinese firm, how long is that likely to keep going, those P68 are from 2011.
I would really try and get an 6500 and cheapest mobo you can find from a reputable firm.

Re: help with parts
Thanks Ploddit, I appreciate the council.
Sam also suggested this mobo to me
ASUS P8Q77-M/CSM LGA 1155 Intel Q77 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
I like ASUS mobos, my current one did me well and the desktop overclocking functions worked really well for a long time, despite people telling me such things are unstable.
Will the ASUS P8Q77's 1155 socket and the I5-6500's 1151 socket work together?

Re: help with parts
No have to be the same.
if you can get stretch to a 6500 just get a cheap Asus Mobo for it starting at 55 quid for an H110 chipset then B150, H170 then Z170.
The cheapest Asus H110 has only 6 PCIe 2.0 lanes where the 170 has 16 @3.0 so if you're planning on a good GPU with higher than full HD resolution it MAY be a bottleneck. BEaring that in mind I would opt for the cheapest Asus H170.

nope.avi
I would rather go for a better mobo and upgrade CPU later. Mobo is life.
But I get it, money is a limiting factor.

I don't agree - IMHO a mobo makes zero difference to fps, it's just a question of paying for the features which you are prepared to pay for, I do agree that a Z series overclocking mobo will have stronger power circuitry.
Some people prefer one make over another but the main manufacturers are so close and most have exactly the same components.

Re: help with parts
PCIex lanes thus entire system bandwith plus quality VRM ( not looking in OC here ) and components will make you and your PC happy for many years. I look at this as a system builder and someone looking to get the most for his money on the long terms.
Think of mainboard as if its the chasis of your custom car. CPU being the engine.
Well not all look at this from this prespective and I dont intend to "make you believe".

Re: help with parts
Having used the asus p5q3 deluxe's desktop overclocking software (EPU Engine) I have to say, while not entirely complete, it did help me manipulate performance and power consumption for 8 years, and I can only assume the hardware made that possible, and it was very convenient.
For this reason, I'm attracted to asus's most recent boards. However, i have to question whether the whole similarity to the GTX 970 "MSI Gaming edition"'s similarity to the ASUS LGA1151's [red] pro gaming logo similarity may be a marketing gimmick.
So, while i'm happy with asus, im superstitiously critical about the advertized similarity.
Ploddit, if we removed the idea of budget, would mobo still matter?

Re: help with parts
200€ means reusing your old RAM and i5 4460 (Haswell Quadcore) with a budget motherboard or i3 4170 (Haswell Dualcore) with a better motherboard.
Skylake means getting DDR4. (It is possible to run DDR3 with Skylake CPUs but Intel doesn't recommend that.)
I am not familiar with your CPU cooler but the included heatsinks (if you buy a BOXED cpu) do their job. They are however louder than aftermarket coolers.
My recommendations are below. I went with german pricings and I hope those aren't too far off of those you get in Ireland.
Intel Core i5-4460, 4x 3.20GHz, boxed - 165€
ASUS H81M-Plus - 50€
=215€
OR
Intel Core i3-4170, 2x 3.70GHz, boxed - 110€
ASUS H81-Gamer (cheapest board with Intel Ethernet and good Onboard Sound) - 75€
=185€
OR if you want Skylake
Intel Core i3-6100, 2x 3.70GHz, boxed - 110€
Crucial DIMM Kit 8GB, DDR4-2133, CL15 - 30€
ASUS H110M-Plus (has USB 3.1 support) - 65€
=205€

Re: help with parts
Well because I use a soundbar I need an spdif output, as I overclock I need a Z, as I have a 2500k now and as I will probably play squad later I would have to get an expensive Z and in order to notice much improvement I would probably get an I7 6700K.
I have the impression from my own experience that Asus are durable and long lived, but fiddly with the old ones being so touchy about RAM, the fan setup was a nightmare and I have a double start since forever on my old P68. I would probably try MSI next as my MSI portable is still going after 8 years.

Re: help with parts
If brands matter anything, let me just say that I had mostly MSI and Gigabyte mainboards in the past, Asus here and there, where the first two never failed, and Asus was pretty crappy and touchy about trivial things and as I hear they are still. In terms of video cards and mainboards I can point you to look at those. I still have Gigabyte mainboard and MSI graphics.
When it comes to power efficiency its not like youre going to run a server rack 24/7 but, its not only mainboard. Have to look at PSU too and other power hungry components. Nowadays equipment is much more power efficent than it was 10 years ago, so I dont know if it matters now.
Now this may differ for other regions, I cant say for that.
Hope that helps a bit.

Re: help with parts
You would make the most out of your budget by going used, at least as far as the CPU goes. I know some people frown upon used components and in case of say, graphics cards and or motherboards, I'd understand but with CPU's, they will either work or they won't.
I bought number of used oor damaged box pc parts, mostly off ebay and never head a single issue. I bought my i5 4690 for about Eur 140 just days after skylake was released ( while shops would still list them for over 220) and I also bough my gtx 970 brand new/sealed for 280 when they were still going for well over 350.
I mostly used ebay uk

@ Ploddit
My chassis and mobo never came with fan leads so i just set them all on high, and away she went. but asus should have included them in the box becuase their software suite suggested fan control.
@Beeee
I'll consider used.
@Massive
I want to stay with asus. im used to them.
@Geronimo
Thanks very much for the recommendations, its given me a lot to consider.
