Mortar related question.

Post by Tomce795 »

So, after a few days of messing around in-game and reading a few articles, I semi-learned how to use mortars. But a question popped up. How do I calculate the exact range from the mortar to the target without a spotter?

When you are in the mortar sight, if you go to the range calculator (4 for conventional forces, 2 for unconventional) and press caps lock, the range will show up at the bottom under the map. Input range, press calculate, dial in range, line up compass, and you're in business, pal!

Yeah I know that. But I want super accurate fire. Because if I do that the shot can be about 30 meters off.

Print all the minimaps on paper. Draw a line from your position to the target. Then draw a vector in the X direction and a vector in the Y direction that takes you from your position to your targets position. Read off the distance of those lines and use Pythagoras (A^2+B^2=C^2). Now you know the exact distance.

OR

Don't do all that and just use what elman told you, mkay?

If you're the SL you can move the marker slightly closer or slightly further away and see how the range changes. That'll give you a more accurate range. Keep in mind there is deviation for mortars too, so some rounds may be quite off your target, while others can be bang on.

Truth, be told I don't wanna use that. Feels a bit like cheating.

Alright, thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to remember that.

Yeah, it's probably faster to just look at the map, then start calculating all that. I'm not a freaking mathematical genius, I'm a casual gamer.

Im not 100% sure, but if you hold the mouse button down so it fires the second you reload, your shots are less accurate, than if you wait a couple seconds.

Can anyone verify if this is true? I've never considered that.

Your squad leader can move the marker further along the map in small increments to find out where the next 50m change is, and use that to get a more accurate range. Works better on 2km maps, and gets your accurate to a level much lower than the mortar deviation itself.

I think the hardest bit is height differences. Not had much chance to figure out how to figure that out.

To be honest Grunt, nobody really uses the height difference when calculating mortars in PR. Hell there isn't even a reliable way to gauge how high your mortars are, to even mention height of the target reliably.

That's the impression I got. I'll occasionally fiddle with it when I know I'm relatively high up (hills around bunkers on Kashan), but even then it's mostly just playing around.
