'Guardian Angel'
Hey guys,
I'm Nibbles, an active player in the PR community. Because I love the game, and love what it has to offer, I was hoping of giving back by joining the modding community. My first step would be to start mapping.
I'm new to the whole modding and mapping thing. I'm still studying the tutorials and trying to work my way through them before starting off.
To cut a long story short, I'm looking for an experienced mapper (or team) who is willing to help me out. I'm full of idea's for maps and am willing to pitch them for you, the first of which would be this: 'Guardian Angel'.
The map is inspired by the webseries 'Dagboek van onze Helden' or 'Diary of our Heroes' in English. It's a vlog produced by the Dutch Ministry of Defense which follows our troops around the world.
'Guardian Angel' will take place in Mali, near to Kidal. It is a large, multi-terrain landscape, filled with hills, mountains and desert. The map will be littered with small settlements around oasis' and water wells.
Mali is known for it's rough terrain and that is what I'd love to portay as well. This gives the map a large emphasis on highly mobile, light infantry. It's large size will give you the long range engagements we love PR for and the settlements give the excitement of close-quarter-battles. The terrain will grant snipers plenty of space to hide and tight roads will make it easy for insurgents to plant IED's and ambushes.
This map will be great on both INS and AAS.
The teams will be BLUFOR (Dutch UN or French UN) vs OPFOR (Insurgents).
BLUFOR start spawn at 'Camp Nassau', a large operations base. (NE corner of the map)
The available assets are:
Dutch UN (Standard)
1x AH-64 Apache
2x CH-47 Chinook
4x Land Rover WMIK GMG
2x Land Rover WMIK HMG
4x ATV
French UN (Alternative)
1x EC 665 Tiger
2x NH90
4x VAB
2x VBCI
4x ATV
OPFOR start spawn at 'Overrun FOB', an former Chadian FOB. (SW corner of the map)
The available assets are:
Insurgents (Standard)
2x Ural zu-23-2 AA Truck
4x CIV - Support Technical
8x Technical
Insurgents (Alternative)
2x Ural zu-23-2 AA Truck
4x CIV - Support Technical
6x Technical
2x Technical SPG-9
I'd love to hear some feedback on it.
If you're up for working together I'd love to hear from you too. You can reach me on discord as @Nibbles#7050 or on Steam as Nibbles.

Re: 'Guardian Angel'
Summary
Name: Guardian Angel
Location: Kidal, Mali
Size: 4km
Factions: Dutch/French (UN) vs Insurgents
Game play type: Infantry, Light Vehicles
Game modes: AAS, INS
BLUFOR is on a mission to protect the indigenous population from radicals attempting to seize power in the region and restore peace. OPFOR's mission is to destabalize the region and to free 'their lands' from the invading UN forces.
The main emphasis will be placed on infantry and light vehicles. The key to the map is high mobility and area denial. Good use of snipers/amubushes and defenses can make it difficult to reach objectives whereas proper use of the limited air assets can change the tide of battle dramatically.
The multi-terrain will give players an open surrounding, prime for long range engagements. Also small urban and tight terrain to excite players with close-quarter-battles.

Re: 'Guardian Angel'
Nice, always good to see someone starting something new, especially if it is for the Dutch!
1 thing, 2 factions with different voices will not work on one map. So either choose France of the Netherlands.
(Easy choice)
I can't help you with mapping unfortunately, also, I can't see that picture you posted.

Thanks, I didn't know that. Preference would ofcourse be the Dutch![R-CON]Mr.VdHeide wrote:Nice, always good to see someone starting something new, especially if it is for the Dutch!

Thanks![R-DEV]AfterDune wrote:I like the idea. But... if you've never mapped before, this is going to be quite the challenge.
Good luck either way!
I know it's going to be a challenge. If it were easy it wouldn't be fun now, would it? This is also why I'm reaching out to the community to get some talented and experienced help.
Seeing you're a dev-mod, could you point me in the right direction or point some people in this direction?

Re: 'Guardian Angel'
Im not trying to dissuade you, but we dont have many people around that are able to be a private mentor. Just because everyone has their own tasks and what not, what I suggest is reading through some of the map threads, the really long ones. They have a crazy amount of feedback and info thats really good for any mapper.Nibbles wrote:Thanks!

Though, if you work on your map and post the progress here itd be easier for anyone to give you ideas/feedback!
Good luck!

I'd give the usual advice of making a 256x2 map just for the sake of learning how to make a map for BF2 start to end.

A person's first map is most likely not going to be released, because it's used as a learning thingy. The mapper will either not finish it, or at the end will notice so many things he would have done differently, now that he's got more experience.
A 4km map is not an easy task, not even for experienced mappers. I'd follow Outlawz's advice and start with something really small, just to get the hang of it. Get some proper terrain going, place some statics, over-/undergrowth, sound effects, flags, spawners... and see what that's like
