Dedicated Server

Post by L. Pirate »

Hello, new to the forums but I've been playing for about a year now (mostly just coop/with bots though)

So after a bit of friendly "persuading" I finally got some of my buddies interested in PR, we were planing on setting up our own dedicated server (just for us) to do some coop/vs bots, general screwing around and having fun, only to find out that you need a "license" to get the server files.

Why?

It seem limiting, unnecessary and overly complicated, not to mention this line:
We do not issue licenses for home hosted or LAN-only servers.
One of my buddies has his own server box at his place that we use, he's pretty much our server guy, why can't he host a sever?

This kind of lowers my opinion of the devs, you force people to jump though hoops just to get the server files that we can lose the ability to use said files for a number of silly reasons (can't have the server offline for more then 5 days, what if we go play other games then want come back later?), and have weird restrictions on who can have said files (no home hosted or LAN-only servers).

We were looking foreword to playing the game together, but unless this is subjected to change we are just going to move on to another game, including myself since I will not support a game that limits something that every multiplayer game should have freely available. (dedicated servers)

We are a small community, a single server could ruin the experience for a lot of players. Due to some issues in the past with some servers the license was introduced, since then we've had 0 problems or were able to deal with them within days/hours.

You also don't need a license for LAN games at all.

Feel free to move on to another game. We won't mind it as the license does a lot more good then it does bad so we aren't changing the system. That might sound rude but just being honest. This game offers you and your friends plenty of opportunities to play.

Also we don't really remove licenses for being offline for 5 days anymore :p

I don't really see how a server can ruin the experience for players, if it's a bad server pick another one.
That's also why you have official servers.

Yes and? This is about Dedicated Servers. Unless we use something like Game Ranger LAN isn't very useful to us, not to mention dedicated give you more control over your server.

And I'm being honest, it's stupid.

We either join a sever, rent a server, or we attempt to get a license (that we may or may not get) and wait god knows how long for it.
Not a whole lot of options here.

That's something I guess.

Let's just say that if you get kicked out of your first match of PR for something like not talking with your microphone because you don't know how or something, it kind of crushes your spirit to continue. Even through there is a lot of material about how to play the game and all that stuff people still miss it and when they get kicked or banned for something they don't realize because they didn't notice, it's a good way to get rid of players.

Which is where starting on coop is not a bad idea, so a player can get used to the team play aspect before going into deployment where people can take things too super serious.

Usually people just meet up on the already existing co-op servers. There are enough of them and they're not all full, hell being with some other players usually helps the process of learning along quite nicely. So it's not really that you would need your own server, it's more that you have to just join a server make a squad and then teach the others through emerging gameplay whilst playing the map.
