So... Is it still too early to update Modelling Guidelines sticky thread with addendum that you can actually now start modelling in modern versions of 3ds max?

Not totally sure if the scripts are ready for that, seems they are, but probably the biggest problem with moving to a later version of max right now is that you will not be able to work with anyone using older versions of max to help with exporting etc as most of us are still using Max9, mainly since we don't want to start working with it then find out there is something we can't do or overcome with it :p

So ye, if you're going to work in a later version of max, you either need to export it yourself or know who is going to export it beforehand, ensuring they have the same version.

It's working for skinning export , statics and bundled perfectly. Haven't tried to lightmap terrains or stuff like that yet

2018 Max support also haven't been confirmed

Weird issue currently. When working on one map I got the overgrowth loaded in fine.

On another map I now have the issue that it only loads in the helpers, not any of the meshes. My log shows all these errors with 'unable to open' problems. Not sure what the cause is as it worked before.

Another mapper in the team has the exact same issue as well.

Setup an entire scene in Max9 (old tools) wanting to LM in Max2012(your latest) but getting an error I had before during export:

I get this error when doing any function running a script it seems. Both apply lightmap settings or render lightmaps gives same error.

My export is not working on 2017 anymore, no error messages but the created folders are always empty, any light? :(

Not sure, tried to export a lot os different stuff that usually worked and failed.

I finally put some changes/fixes together, sorry it took so long.
Link on first page is updated.
  • Added Mats' code to speed up static import during lightmapping.
  • Added worldlife's importer to use for SkinnedMesh/BundledMesh objects with including skin modifiers.
  • Fix bug during import of statics with multiple geoms.
  • Exclude .con files containing non-LM relevant templates (e.g. PCOs) from being loaded during static import.

Fixed a bug here that couldn't deal with destroyables being applied lmsizes straight after import. This is actually the same bug as the one experienced below, so that shouldn't be an issue anymore either.

I tried this on Win7 and Win10 with different max versions, always worked for me. So no idea what else might be causing this on your end.

The map in question is Sahel, available in public PR.
This stumps me really. I'm not able to reproduce it either, it finds the templates just fine if I try to import Sahel OG.

It seems obvious, but just to make sure, the fullPath values that are shown in the log are the correct ones and the files exist? And the level being loaded is also from the same mod directory?

Ignore the 2nd instance that looks for /bf2/, that's only relevant for mods that still use bf2 content, where the script might have to look for the meshes also in /bf2/ if not found in the actual mod's folder.

Thanks for the confidence, ;) but I also think it's too early. Right now the best people to use these tools are experienced devs who are able to recognize the difference between bugs and wrong usage of the tools. Less experienced or new modders might think they did something wrong even if a bug in the new developments is responsible. I'm grateful of course for everyone who tries the tools and reports back, but for now anyone doing so should still consider themselves a tester (beta at best).

Nice work! Very happy you found some time to look a these issues. As for the last one, yeah all those files exist and are in the same mod folder.
So for you it worked just fine? Weird indeed :/ I'll try again later with the new version. Maybe it was related to another issue you fixed. Currently LMing Sahel using the old tools as wanted to release it soon but next map I will try out yours again. Which shouldn't be too long from now :'( Always another map to lightmap.

Fixed a bug here that couldn't deal with destroyables being applied lmsizes straight after import. This is actually the same bug as the one experienced below, so that shouldn't be an issue anymore either.





I tried this on Win7 and Win10 with different max versions, always worked for me. So no idea what else might be causing this on your end.



This stumps me really. I'm not able to reproduce it either, it finds the templates just fine if I try to import Sahel OG.

It seems obvious, but just to make sure, the fullPath values that are shown in the log are the correct ones and the files exist? And the level being loaded is also from the same mod directory?

Ignore the 2nd instance that looks for /bf2/, that's only relevant for mods that still use bf2 content, where the script might have to look for the meshes also in /bf2/ if not found in the actual mod's folder.

Fixed silly typo. (incudeFileName -> includeFileName...) Should have been the cause.

Lightmap size file doesn't load non-uniform sample sizes

Used 4 terrain patches, patch size 64, texture was actually 256 (4x 128 ).

Used 'split terrain', patches aren't named right, its 00, not 0, so on.

Could you add support for LOD switch and cull distances coding to exporter? Create the .tweak file on export and add the
GeometryTemplate.setSubGeometryLodDistance and ObjectTemplate.cullRadiusScale lines to it, values input in exporter window. Also retain the values so multiple statics can be exported with same values.

The current tools already support materials coding, the only reason I personally still need to load editor for statics is to code cull and LOD switch which is boring, repetitive especially when having to do it for multiple statics. Being able to input this on export would eliminate the need to load each exported static in editor afterwards entirely. I'm sure bundledmesh export could also benefit from this.

Materials coding fails if anchor is removed, can you fix this?

I fixed a bug like that some time ago. In case this happens with the most current version, can you describe what you did to get to this point? Loading non-uniform samples works fine for me.

I was under the impression that it's not necessary for 2x2 terrain lightmaps, currently leading zeros are added dependent on maximum value, however it wouldn't be a problem to require a minimum of 2 digits if BF2 can't handle it otherwise.

I'll take a look at this. Regarding the bold sentence, what do you mean with retain the values? Usually the values are retained on a per-node basis, i.e. when you change a value it's saved on the root node and if one exports multiple nodes, the value entered in the past will be used. In contrast to a "global" setting which would be used for all nodes in the scene (but with no way to have different sizes in the same scene).

It happens with 16 and 64 patches as well, I don't know if BF2 cares but do proper double-digit naming to be safe, please.

What I did for all the weapons is add those using useful file utilities to batch place the line codes of new created LODs into all the tweak files
