Starting From Nothing

Post by AndyPUK »

I'm looking at coming back to PR but I left when I went MAC for work and XBox for gaming so don't even have a PC.

Do I need a high spec machine to play PR or would a machine that was high spec 6 years ago do?

An 8 y/o 600$ laptop ran PR until it died (literally). Decent enough CPU, 4GB RAM and 512Mb GPU, and you can run it.

The higher, the better
Pick any build with decent singlethreaded CPU from that list, and you're fine.
Popular cheap setups are high clocked i3's\pentiums.

Time to give up and respawn.

So would it be true to say if I get something too modern it may conflict in some way?

I don't think that's necessarily true, then again I'm not a tech-savvy person. Maybe some combinations of CPUs/GPUs won't run, but I don't think that's a very likely thing to occur. It is true though that the game will run at lower FPS than most contemporary games due to the engine limitation of only supporting single core CPUs(dual/quads weren't really a thing back then).

With that being said, you should invest into a quad core CPU with a decent GPU at the very least and forget about maxing out frames for PR. If you're not interested in the wide range of PC gaming though and you can buy a cheap desktop PC from 4-8 years ago, I think it's worth trying it out, IF you get good enough FPS(40+) - I used to play on a decent(when it came out) laptop from 2008 and I can tell you that playing at 20 FPS max isn't a pleasure.
VTRaptor: but i only stopped for less than 10 secs and that fucking awesome dude put 2 of them

]CIA[ SwampFox: well my definition of glitching is using an enemy kit to kill the enemy

Just_Dave: i have a list about PR players, and they r categorized by their skill

Para: You sir are an arse and not what the game or our community needs.

AlonTavor: Is that a German trying to make me concentrate?

Heavy Death: join PRTA instead - Teamwork is a must there.

LGA775 Motherboard.
4GB RAM minimum.
Efficient 3.33ghz E8600 CPU has lower than usual consumption of 65watts iirc. It may only be dual core but PR doesnt make use of 2+ cores anyway.

Alternatively an AMD 64 X2 Athlon motherboard, with 5600+ CPU. Though there are higher spec proccessors above 5600+, they are less efficient at 93w (iirc) thus demand beefier psu. Same goes for beyond the E8600. visit cpu-world website to see available models.

An nvidia GT240 video card is perfect and really cheap, infact all these recommendations can be had for around 15gbp on ebay, more so with far east sales, my experience is they take14 days to deliver. Things pop up around EU all time too but slightly higher price. The GT 240 is solid card with 512 GDDR5 vRAM which is sufficient.

These systems wont require more than 400watt PSU; if not 300. Use wattage calculators online, many to choose from.

Upto you what operating system, graphics card drivers are well supported in any case, even 2007 cards are supported by Windows 7 compatible drivers. I suggest XP or Win 7. Avoid vista like the plague.

Case? check a local recycling centre, or haggle a local pc shop. They arent always pretty sure but get the job done.

Nah you'll need a 5ghz overclocked i7 7th gen, 32gb of ram and two 1080s but even with 2 1080s people report drops so just to be safe go with three
