Yamalia Winter

Post by Raidonrai »

I think this map has a lot of problems.

First of all is the lack of visual cover for infantry. There are almost no bushes on the map, and a lot of the trees don't have any leaves at ground level.

I assume in an attempt to counter this you've made the terrain extremely bumpy across the entire map to provide rudimentary cover for infantry, but this, in turn, is mildly annoying to run around on as inf, constantly having to go up and down, and also makes crewing ground vehicles genuinely nausea-inducing because of the shaking. Also has the knock on effect of making it very difficult for APCs to find flat ground to stop sliding whilst in the "wooded" areas of the map, and makes it literally impossible for APCs or Tanks to hit anything whilst moving.

The problem of lack of visual cover for infantry is further exacerbated by the long view range the map has. This means that once vehicles, especially those with thermals, are in a good position, there is almost nothing infantry can do except lie down and hope their particular little ditch doesn't get splashed with HE.

I have to say I'm pretty disappointed that we've lost regular Yamalia for this objectively inferior version and if possible I'd like to see old Yamalia return as a Summer variant, like Dovre.

The lack of a full blizzard layer is also totally lame and is possibly the only thing that would make this version more interesting in my eyes.

Honestly, I hate it, more than old yamalia, which i already didn't like and felt wasn't PR quality. Only time I've had fun is running a mortar/trans squad and thats just because mortars are still OP on this map with UAV and island type flags.

Not sure why its ingame and the server files, but other great maps like sunset city, ejod and quinling with some work aren't ingame.

I think if you add like a snow storm for like a alt version it might be better

blufor APC have a huge advantage on killing INF than RUS.
Either give RUS a thermal APC or give INF more cover

I would disagree on a huge advantage. On Yamalia its pretty easy to see people on both sides if they are not in smoke. I agree on the inf needing better cover.

I dont think the canadian soldiers can hide very well in snow with their bright green vests.

IMO there should be less open fields and more trees. Currently infantry is pushed into island-ish deathtraps and narrow chokepoints that are easy target for APCs.

Something I've noticed is the Canadian camo is a lot more obvious than the Russian camo, which seems like a weird reverse of past patches.

Also the trench layout is problematic for the Canadians. It really impedes the progress of vehicles which I think is the reason why the Russian team seems to have a lot easier time at rushing. I mean crossing the trench system almost requires you to drive 300-500m east or west of the trench flag, which is time consuming considering you can basically just draw a diagonal line between the two mains and the flags.

I tried to recreate the flag layout the best I could but the current flag layout for Yamalia is not in the gallery. https://imgur.com/l35F0DJ

and risk getting stuck...
Not only did the DEVs totally throw off the CAS/AA balance and make TOWs useless against tanks, no that was not enough. They also had to introduce their most controversial change yet, a 16 character limit on player names.

It is a risky business doing it in a M35 troop/logi truck. Slide one way or another and the vehicle will definitely get stuck. Even if all goes perfectly it still slows you down a lot compared to the route the Russians have to take.

It is really really too easy to spot fobs in commander uav. Maybe the fob tent (roof) in white instead of the current brown would fit better

Can't change the texture, custom textures for fob camonet caused crashes when loading next map AFAIK.

Maybe nerf the uav viewdistance/altitude instead? Or fog/snow storm like so as on dovre?

Dude no. How about we have at least one snow map where you can actually see past 100m?

I really like yamalia winter especially because they restored APC balance.
Thermals vs. no thermals isn't a big deal without all the grass :D
The thing with yamalia or every map with almost no buildings/dense forest is that mortars+commander
is a very strong combination.
The result is that teams have to play more dynamic without a lot of FOBs. Utilize your (3!)trans/apc to move your infantry across the map.

I really liked it when I played, it feels like winter warfare. But the issue with it is that you can see everything, which means mortars and APC dominate a little. I haven't played it more than once, but that one unfortunately ended in a horrible slaughter. Canadians, even with two tows covering each other, got mortared, and their apcs killed. Then their inf had a hard time with our apcs on west and east, and our inf coming from their south

Maybe remove mortars on alt? Then you would have three very different layers.
