Announcing the Project Reality Documentary

Post by Deviro »

An update on the Reality Documentary project

It is with sadness today that I announce that the documentary project I spearheaded has entered a frozen state. That means I or somebody else might make a similar thing in the future, but as of right now I'm not working on my own project anymore.

Read further if you want to know why, but that's the gist of it.

I knew from the beginning that this could happen, me basically loosing interest and motivation to continue, but it finally happened in Oct last year. In fact I haven't spent a single minute working on the doc since Nov. I was hoping it's just a phase, me being moody or something, but as Dec arrived and then Jan I realized there's no point in hiding the truth from myself or you. This project is a bust, for now.

This doesn't mean I don't want a project like this to happen. Quite the contrary. I hope I will get back to do something similar in the future, but right now it's just not the right time for me.

I really hope somebody out there reading this gets to do it one day. Every day there's less of us who want to elevate PR and keep it alive and before it's too late somebody should probably document what happened.

Be good to each other and I'm sorry for letting you down. See you on the battlefield.

I've always been interested in the history of Project Reality and I always had the long term goal to make a documentary about it.

Well, I don't want to wait anymore, because I'm afraid if I don't make it nobody will at this point.

So I've set out to make it a reality. It's going to take some time. There will be a lot of learning and effort put into it, but I want to do it, no matter what.

I'm going to interview developers, players, community managers, tournament organizers and hopefully many more in order to create a mutlidimensional view of what Project Reality was in the past and is now in the present.

A short Proof of Concept video will be released this year to show the direction and style of the project. It will also help me with getting more interviews to take place in the future, for the full doc, due next year.

One thing to note is that this project is NOT affiliated with the Project Reality developers or PRTA or any other community I'm involved in. This is purely my initiative and idea.

This sounds really like a very good idea if done right and I wish you all the best with this project as the true history of PR is really quite complex and it is about time more people knew it! :D

Rhino about to unload the dirty laundry and closet skeletons of PR.
Not only did the DEVs totally throw off the CAS/AA balance and make TOWs useless against tanks, no that was not enough. They also had to introduce their most controversial change yet, a 16 character limit on player names.

Thank you! I will do my best. One of my biggest regrets with PR is that I wasn't around earlier to witness it, which means I will learn a lot from this experience as well. I hope I can transfrom that to other people as well.

Cool idea!!! You may still be able to get ahold of Requeim... The project started a year or so before BF2's release afaik.. 2004 or so?

Quite alot of history to cover over 14 years development!

I got a great intro idea for ya - slow, twangy banjo plucking while the old Pepperidge Farms guy reads the following quote, name and year very slowly:

"There are at least two kinds of games. One could be called finite, the other infinite. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, an infinite game for the purpose of continuing the play."

James P. Carse, 1823

(no idea on the year, just kidding around - great idea man, can't wait to see it!!)

I see psychickactivity has interviewed 2 dozen people or so. But some of those interviews seem to be unavailableanymore. Has anybody archived those interviews somewhere? I will contact him anyway, but he hasn't been online in the forums since 2017.

Some of his Old interviews are archived in private forums. His Interviews are in the form of a long blog post with large responses. I've cleared it with Mineral if you'd like them I can send them to you.

I've posted an update about the state of the doc in the original post above. In short: the project is frozen for now.
