Returning Player: Server Map Variety?

Post by |8P|WOLF »

Hi,

I am returning to PR after taking some years break from computer gaming. One thing that bothered me with PR before leaving was servers/players always wanting to play the same maps over and over and over and over again while completely ignoring alot of the beautiful and quality maps, factions, and eras. Some of them one was basically not able to see or play (except coop), perhaps once on release or a special community event.

Did this habit change or is it still prevalent?

Muttrah is still a thing, yes.

But in all seriousness, it's sometimes OK, it depends on the admins who set the votes, since the majority of players always tend to vote for the same maps whenever they see it in the mapvote (I'm gulty of this too, I'll never not vote for Silent Eagle). The admins need to curate the vote to get some variety. Some servers do this better than others.

I still dream of playing Vietnam maps , which was greatly discouraged today because maybe factions have no scopes in standard issue firearms to both factions

Exactly I only once or twice played Vietnam and Falklands upon release and loved the refreshing experience provided by the different weapon system or aspects like non-scoped weapons which put a big emphasis on support weapons (MG) and supression reflecting true firefights that take minutes (in reality even hours) instead of seconds pretty good (firing volume at something you barely see).

I can see that there are potential reason why this PR eras or the lack of optics aren´t that popular as it leads to an experience that derives from traditional FPS gaming. I myself must admit that the lack of eye adaption mechanics in PR and pretty much all other games makes distant target aquisition with iron-sights much more difficult than in reality (this is why Arma has this zoom to substitute for videogame technology not being able to simulate what you eye can do).

I also get it that map/faction quality can be slightly different. Some factions and maps also have seen more time and love to become polished. And yes especially the big open maps like the mentioned Silent Eagle or the Falklands have the risk to end up very one-sided with dimishing fun especially for the inferior party. I also criticize the maps that are basically already decided by who wins the first major vehicle engagement. And sure the Argentinian Army or Vietcong may have not such an popularity like the USMC.

I also don´t point fingers at the server responsibles. I knew from back then some of them tried to push new maps which sometimes lead to players leaving the server looking for their 24/7 Muttrah & Co experience. Nobody wants to pay/donate for an empty server. With 100 players being the new standard and a community that is present but not triple-A mainstream game strong l, I see the issue.

But still phase it out and bury this fantastic content of thousand hours and love somewhere in PR´s code never to be seen in true online play? No, joke, it really is heartbreaking.

But muttering aside, what I write here is an old story. Solutions are important but as I would love to provide to one, I am no better as most of you guys that probably tried to help the situation, as almost every effective idea collides with the freedom of player demands and server admins.

Thus I stick to be the 1000001 guy to encourage all of you to be open-minded for new experience, sure playing Muttrah or Kashan a thousand times feels like a well-oiled machine running and "feels comfy and being at home" but true military combat is about adapting and overcome new challenges and situations. Don´t become the 24/7 Dust2 Server guy... You miss out alot.

Anyways PR is an outstanding achievement and I am looking forward to the upcoming WW2 release!

Yeah map variety is a big problem on a servers like HOG or SSG where admins would only start voting with the maps THEY want to play. And usually its asset-dominated 4km maps like Saaremaa, Khamisiyah, Wanda Shan, Kashan Desert, etc; because they themselves mostly play as CAS/APC/TANK squads.

I find it very difficult to find server running falklands, vietnam, or, for that matter, any infantry-oriented map.

i have the same problem, tired of playing mutrah, kashan and wanda chan. personally like to play with factions there dont use scopes, like millitia, vietnam maps or gaza. so everytime i want to join a server i look at the prspy and check the map

I assure the scope thing is not the reason falklands and vietnam is not played.

I might be lucky but I feel like HOG frequently play the Vietnam maps.

No, dear Rabbit.

I took a break from PR and modding and i dont remember what maps you all made except the sp mappacks etc.

What about Ramadi, the other Sbeneh or other maps you have in WIP stage?

In my opinion :
The problem aren't your maps. Compare the maps GPO's/FACTIONS that get played often with your maps GPO's/Factions that get less attention. Also a big factor, serveradmins and their map rotation or mapvote decisions.

People cant play your maps when they're not in maprotation or must compete vs maps with a nicer GPO.

There are some perfectly good maps in PR that I have never seen in multiplayer. Xiangshan, Mestia, Yamalia, Nuijamaa, and Tad Sae come to mind.

Honestly, I think the mapvote system is flawed because unless the admin is willing to hold a vote between less-played maps, people will simply always vote for Fallujah or Muttrah because those are the familiar ones. The mapvote should push players out of our comfort zones with diverse maps, not fossilize the few most popular maps.

If you never see Xiangshan and Nuijamaa then you are probably not playing often enough or playing in places where map selection has always been a problem. Maps like Mestia and Tad Sae are simply too small for when a server is seeded, and not preferred over maps that are good for seeding, when seeding. Yamalia is just a bad rework that is avoided for a reason.

Some maps are popular/played more for a reason, because of a specific style of play they offer, because of how easy to understand and play they are, some for assets, some for inf. Similar to dust2 in CS.

Map votes almost always have in mind the map size (alternating 2k and 4k from time to time) and keeping players on the servers, thus some maps get played more often than others, or why some never feature. You never vote for Fallujah, as its used just to seed for a reason, and honestly atm the Muttrah 24/7 narrative is an old one which is simply not true anymore in my opinion.

i just got again from long break (2014 my old machine got broken and got no money for decent laptop/pc) im very sad, that lot of players are gone, i had many many nights with the guys from RIP, MERK, T&T, 10th mountin, 24/7 basrah, and really good maps are no longer here, qinlinq was my favorite. seven gates, qwai river, ejod from retro pack, im im truly happy that the game is still on, and i spend my free hours playing again.
