How do you Hover Harrier?

Post by Lt._Dossier-1 »

So thanks for the admin that set the map to Falklands and vehicle warfare. I had a great time and fun. Most of us just teamkill in the Carrier because of taxi for the runway and stupidity and the argentine attack the carrier(it's not that fun).

So I found a harrier floating in sea (near the carrier like 10m). so I Asked what is the key for Hover but it's just silent. So what is the key for the Hover?

"S" by default. It's whatever you set your "Reverse Thrust" to in your Airplane control settings. If you use a joystick throttle then it's between 0% (for full reverse thrust) and 50% (for no forward or reverse thrust).

Be warned however you shouldn't try to take off by hovering ingame. While yes it is possible to do so, if you spend enough time climbing high enough so the forward thrust engine has enough time to "spin up", it is much slower and much more dangrous than just doing the short take-off from the runway and over the ski-jump.

We have made that Harrier like this because in real life the Harrier is a "STOVL" (Short Take-Off, Vertical Landing" aircraft, meaning the Harrier can not take off vertically with a full payload of fuel and weapons, it is simply too heavy.
Unfornatly we can't simulate the weight of the weapons or have fuel in PR, let alone able to simulate it's weight so we have only made the "hover engine" just powerful enough to land, with hardly having enough power to climb vertically so trying to take off vertically ingame takes so much time that at the end you are far better off to just taxi to the runway and take off normally.

To land vertically with the Harrier, fly towards the carrier and start holding down reverse thrust (S) well before you get to the Carrier, then by the time you get to the carrier you're hover engine will have spun up enough to keep you in the sky, before the time you're going slow enough that your wings are no longer providing lift.
Also FYI, if the enemy start attacking your main, best to jump in the ATC/ Base Air Defences and shoot them down

Simply holding s won't help you that much, at a certain point between the switch to VTOL mode the control surfaces go inverted, if you fail to correct this you'd end up in an uncontrollable dive (At low ALT). also it is possible to vertical take off with the harrier, I believe you need to be around 100-200m above ground level and keep the nose leveled but it'll take too long to climb to 100m.
