What happened to the SPG aiming???
It's not accurate anymore!
How are we supposed to aim if it is not accurate? You mark the target in the map, it says 350 meters, you match that with the sights and surprise, the rocket hits waaay before the target.

the spg's heavy rocket is the bottom of the sights. the top sights is for lighter rocket.Jorgee! wrote:It's not accurate anymore!

Re: What happened to the SPG aiming???
I agree. I just went to check it and have to tell you that I failed to hit a rocket techie (which is a very fragile vehicle) at 800m range with ~20 SPG shots. Neither with Heat nor with FRAG, and yes, I did correct my sights downwards and tried all possible sight marks as I kept firing.
Admittedly, for some of my 20 odds shots I received the "team vehicle damage" messages, but they came from the destructible targets on "Test Bootcamp" at those 800m. Both the upside and the downside part of the 800m marker don't work for neither FRAG nor HEAT. Neither does the marker work that is below.
This is a huuuuge disadvantage, as APCs and Tanks that it is supposed to be fighting against do not have such a drop and better optics, too.

Double the normal range if you use SPG HE-Frags. (350 = 700, 200 = 400 etc.)

But the sights don't go further than 1000m! And that didn't help me.T.E.D.F4257845 wrote:Double the normal range if you use SPG HE-Frags. (350 = 700, 200 = 400 etc.)

500m is the max effective range of frags then.lao wrote:But the sights don't go further than 1000m! And that didn't help me.
And the SL markers are +/- 25m, so keep that in mind when judging distance.

You can go for targets further than the sights tell you. Just use the triangles to add more range. So, for example.lao wrote:But the sights don't go further than 1000m! And that didn't help me.
Let's use a target that's 650m away.

First, you want to line up the 1000m marker with your target, shown in the left figure with red line. Then, with a bit of math, we know, that in order to hit the target, we need to multiply the original range with 2, which gives us 1300m. Next all you have to do is to count up 3 triangles on your sights (which adds 300m) and then make a reference point, marked on the left figure with green. Remember that point and then move your 1000m triangle marker to it. Launch and voila. Your target is history. And you can do the same thing with HEAT to hit targets from extreme ranges. It's worth to note that you should be on a flat ground before engaging targets that are further away since the SPG rounds tend to deviate when you are firing from an angle.
It takes a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it you can hit pretty much any target on the map, provided that it doesnt move while you make the adjustments.

Thanks. That was for Frag, right?
And what about HEAT? I still can't get over the frustration that the sights appear utterly useless at 800m and just don't work the way they are supposed to.
Why can't we have sights that actually work, and not having to shoot 50+ shots and using a physical ruler instead of just aligning with known range...
Update: I just wasted another 24 something shots, trying to hit that rocket techie on shooting range at 800m with SPG. Final stats: rocket techie vs. spg techie, 50:0
I even started thinking there was something wrong with the map or the rocket techie, so I had to bring in a ZU-23 to see if that techie was actually destructible! It was, in fact, after 2 "mags" from ZU-23 it succumbed - even though the sights don't offer nearly as much precision and magnification SPG sights are supposed to give.

Re: What happened to the SPG aiming???
Yes, I used frags in the example but it works for both HEAT and frags. It's just a bit more challenging to pull of with frags as you have to douple the range and it can take a while to adjust to hit targets from extreme range, es specially if you don't happen to have objects in the background to use as reference.
And the sights do work, have to say SPG sights may be the most accurate ones in the game, right next to the chinese HAT kit sights. On old Black Gold when waiting for assets to spawn I often spent time using the SPG in the russian main to shoot into the city and the rounds usually ended up where the marker was and that was over 2000m.
Just remember, that the tip of the triangle is where the range marker is, not inside or the bottom of the triangle. And like mentioned, the SQL marker has that small error in rangefinding. Play around with it until you get the hang of it. Good luck!
Edit : Not sure if it's fixed already, but there used to be a bug/feature with frags which caused you to fire blank rounds when you angeled the barrel too high. If you hear higher pitch launch sound when you fire than normally, then that means that you failed to launch.

It's still a thing, I didn't know it was related to barrel angle though.T.E.D.F4257845 wrote:Edit : Not sure if it's fixed already, but there used to be a bug/feature with frags which caused you to fire blank rounds when you angeled the barrel too high. Re: What happened to the SPG aiming???
I don't doubt you had it right on the nail back in the day, but I tried the top of triangle, I tried bottom, I tried middle of it, I tried "in between 800 and 900 marks" and "in between 700 and 800 marks". It simply doesn't work.T.E.D.F4257845 wrote: And the sights do work, have to say SPG sights may be the most accurate ones in the game, right next to the chinese HAT kit sights. And yes, I do now about the 50m miscalculation for marker. To eliminate that factor I used rcon teleport 800. It was EXACTLY 800m and I couldn't hit it with ANYTHING, wasting more than 50 shots total.
P.S. If you are that good with it, feel free to try hitting a rocket techie at 800m on the shooting range of Bootcamp

Re: What happened to the SPG aiming???
So since it's 800m, I added 6 triangles to the 1000m marker, used the cloud formation as a reference point and boom. Wasn't a direct hit, but close enough to destroy it.

Did you try HE as well?
Also, this test design is somewhat flawed in that the techie is too close to the wall. In my experiments, I put it slightly front, by some 7-10 meters, so that I'm actually shooting at the techie and not at the wall (that is much larger). Because of the wall, your target was actually around 3-4 times wider than the rocket techie, and 2-3 times taller.
Still, that we had to go to such length (literally resorting to using clouds instead of sight marks without even seeing the target in the scope anymore!) shows very well how broken the sights are IMO. And that wasn't even max range! Try doing that when in the battle, when you only have several seconds to prepare your shot.
