The US army also uses what's called the BFT or Blue Force Tracker system, which shows, again, your location, both regular, topo, and overhead/aerial/satillite images and the location of any other BFT systems in the area. Presently they are mounted on vehicles but personal ones are only a year or 2 out, so the "minimap" isn't a farfetched concept. A little simplefied and more exact to be sure, but still.
