Mumble WASAPIOutput: Initialize failed: hr=0x88890008

Post by TH0M »

Mumble used to work fine, but recently i updated Windows to Version 22H2 Build 19045.2965 then i started having the following issues:
  • Others can hear me on Mumble, but i can not hear others
What i've done:
  • Updated audio driver and its settings
  • Uninstalled > Reinstalled PR
  • Checked and made sure every possible mumble settings and settings procedure are according to recommendations given on the forum
  • Made sure it's not a muted mumble / mumble volume issue
Digging and comparing through the mumble Console.txt content i found the following lines (which weren't there before but showed up after the Windows update):
  • WASAPIOutput: Initialize failed: hr=0x88890008
Digging around the web i couldn't get any further to resolve the issues, so here i am.

Provided below are the stats from PR Launcher, any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Reason 1:

- irrelevant

Reson 2:

- irrelevant

Reason 3:

- Screenshot provided (p.s.: not visible in screenshot, but all apps volume maxed out on windows volume mixer / tray as well)
- The same settings were used when i was troubleshooting while playing on live server, got allocated to the correct squad by the Mumble service, was able to speak to others, but couldn't hear others.

Reason 4:
- i believe it's correctly set

Please direct me to the section of your post that you think i'm not paying enough attention to, because as stated in my original post, i've checked and done all those before i made my post but those didn't help.

Do you have any weird audio drivers that could result in mumble output not working correctly? Or any weird settings on? Similarly to what happened here https://www.realitymod.com/forum/showth ... ost1943268
Alright, I have fixed the issue.

I had speaker fill enhancement enabled through my sound drivers. Once I disabled that, I now receive audio cues again. I think the problem was PR mumble has a limited bandwidth for using audio cues or whatever and using speaker fill enhancement was buffering the audio with too high of a bandwidth for the launcher to correctly use.

Can you run the Mumble audio wizard (Configure->Audio wizard) and see if the test sound play?

Other than that everything I find regarding the error code points to some driver issue like Suchar mentioned. One thing might be worth trying: https://www.vmix.com/knowledgebase/arti ... udio-input

I don't think so, it's a fresh update, and i never installed any random drivers other than the one provided from the official Motherboard manufacturer's website.

PS: related to that post you linked, audio cue works fine on my end (i.e. i'm able to hear the static sound Mumble plays when pressing the Squad / SL talk button)

I've tried this, test sound didn't play

I've tried this one as well, more or less the only and first thing i came to when searching for the error code.
At least now i know it's not some problems with some exact known solutions.
I've tinkered with various Speaker Default Format options, but maybe i missed something, I'll try to tinker a bit more with it and look into possible driver issues as well.

Thank you guys for your replies,
cheers!

Update:

Issues solved, mumble works fine now just did a quick test
- incoming Mumble voice (Mumble Output) is audible again
- as well as the sound test from the Audio Wizard
- no more initialization error code generated within Mumble Console.txt
- i don't think default Sound Format matters much (tho, for clarity, i set it to 16bit 48,000 Hz)

Solution:

For everyone else who might stumble into the same problem after recent Windows updates and are using MSI motherboard, i used the Nahimic Restore Tool that comes with the latest Realtek HD Universal Driver.

I didn't use it before since i don't really like using additional third party audio processing software such as Nahimic, and since everything else worked just fine except for Mumble i didn't bother to deal with said Tool.

Thanks for the help guys
