PR Topographic Maps

Today, just for fun, I spent the day exploring GIS by creating a topographic map using the HeightMap (DEM) of Bamyan.

To do this, I utilized three tools:
  • QGIS to generate the hillshade and contour lines
  • Photoshop to design the map’s symbology (roads, buildings, etc.)
I believe much of the manual symbology work could be automated using QGIS plugins like SCP. Nevertheless, I am satisfied with the result, despite the time-consuming Photoshop process.
There are still areas for improvement, such as adding spot heights at peaks, aligning the altitude with the map’s reference and including a grid. However, I doubt I will revisit this project.
