Destroyers???

I have been doing some research and have seen that I would like to have more fun with the ships. How about having U.S. Destroyers in a pretty big map. You could have the carrier and the destroyer right next to each other like in BF1942. You could have them way far next to borderline of the map. You could have a map like that along with the Harrier ship for USMC. Man, this would be so awesome to have the squad leaders request support from ships. You could have the squad leader request fire support from Destroyer and the destroyer operator would get in and fire the missile. The effect would be similar to 2 artillery bombs.
I know this would take a time to model. Maybe it could be ready for 0.5??? I know a RAF jet needs to happy like the Harrier. Also, you would give it to the USMC in some maps where the carrier is far away from the target as in border line of the map if you know what I mean.

It would be awsome im sure, but nothing like this has properly been planned for, and there are alot of other things with priority.
Thing is the 1942 navy maps, i seem to remember a couple guys driving the ships around, then 20 other people waiting for planes to spawn, with nowhere to go. IT would have to be thought out very well but im not sure if bf2 could simulate realistic naval combat too well?

yea il would be easier just to have player controlled arty which isnt too good. destroyers are player controlled arty that moves

uh, afaik there are no destroyers (= ships with artillery guns) in use both by the british and american army, though america got two or so of them mothballed - but nope, no one in active duty
(also, pleaaaase stop requesting that much and especially stop requesting only us or uk stuff)

......We "Coalition forces" rule no doubt about it alright and we are aloud to request what ever we like :wink: cause we are the best.

Ok, lets make a list of engagements in bf2 that would be alot farther at real life....


- infantry engagements
- tank engagements
- helicopter engagements
- jet engagements
- every other possible thing


honestly, ships were one of my favorite parts of bf42, and if they were done right, they would b e great fun

clearly you do in iraq....
the point remains, that the parties ingame should remain balanced and mec+pla should also get kick-*** equipement, but noeone bothers to request something for them
I think he should be able to request whatever stuff he likes.
i already made my point in another thread:
-devs have too much work atm to focus on new models
-they must complete the british army first before working on completely new meshes
-gameplay issues are much more pressing right now

there are no carriers with artillery size guns in real life, the only thing you´ve got are some aa guns and things like the phalanx system
basically, there are no modern ships with big guns, all rockets now

Boats don't attack each other in this day and age. They're designed to attack land with precision missiles. That's why aircraft carriers have huge open decks on the top, don't you think it'd be stupid to have it open if they were designed for boat to boat combat? Navies are designed to move upto enemy shores and fire at them. They're not designed to drive upto enemy boats and take potshots.

what would be quite fun, was a static ship with A missille Battery on board;
manned by a player (or even better, usable by the com) It could fire on long range missile to destroy not-moving vehicles.
Like an anti-vehicle artillery. (of course it should have to be requested like the common arti)

and here i thought have hugen open decks for the airplanes to land on ;)
and most ships are designed to attack boath targets on land and enemy boats and vehicles. but most times they just use rockets, guns get rarer and rarer on ship, and afaik usually they carry (they = NOT carriers) nothing bigger than 76mm (but those sometimes gut a crazy rof).

I'm sorry, I just recently realized that 0.5 will be the next release. I meant 1.0. You could have like a map where the Marine Spec Ops have to request some a mission fire controlled missile. I meant the EFFECT would be of 2 artillery pieces.

EDIT: Since this is a reality mod, there is not much naval combat. I mean it would be as a support to replace the planes in one map.

Ships has been mentioned many times. The main problem. Bf2 engine can not support this, (when a vehicle is moving and player is not inside it) wither you fall off or the driver 'teamkills' you. its not like 1942 when you can stand on the hood of a jeep and not fall off.

The destroyer would be the only thing moving... Why would you have people walking around the ship??? You could also make a fixed position for the helipad (one Seahawk aka Blackhawk). So basically we're looking at the "captain" of the ship and the weapon control and the Helipad for the Blackhawk. This would require some decent teamwork from squads.

Naval gunfire support would be nice. However, there aren't many "big guns" aboard ships these days, just tons of missiles. For example, on US and UK cruisers and destroyers, there is only one 4.5" or 5" naval gun, plus some close defense guns for use against aircraft, anti-ship missiles and small surface craft.

As far as actual moving ships, there are some small ships and fast patrol craft more scalable to the maps, but they can't really lend much gunfire support to forces that far inland.

Small patrol boats/fast attack craft are as probably as good as its going to get with regard to naval combat with this engine, I think.

Someone seriously needs to hack this engine. Either that or EA should release more mod support. But yeah...Can you give us a reason why the engine won't make the Destroyer ship work?
