The tanks are just about right...

Post by Darkpowder »

But to collate anything that people are thinking about....

Previous Zoom values back?
Things to stop the one-person noob tank-platform?

And.. I've often wanted to see this in PR.
"XM1028 120mm Canister Tank Cartridge

The Tank Cartridge, 120mm, Canister, XM1028, is a tank round comprised of 1150 (est.) tungsten balls, which are expelled upon muzzle exit. There is no fuse on this round. While the dispersion pattern increases with range as the velocity of the balls decreases, the dense tungsten balls are used to minimize the velocity fall-off.
This round meets urgent CINC, USFK requirements to provide effective rapid lethal reaction against massed assaulting infantry armed with hand held anti-tank and automatic weapons at close range (500 meters or less) thereby improving survivability. Additionally, this round will significantly increase the tank’s lethality and enhance the tank crew’s survivability. This additional capability will give the Abrams Tank the ability to survive RPG ambushes and to fully support friendly infantry assaults. "
I know armed drunk and angry mentioned this in an old archive thread, but devs... an interesting round, i'm sure you'll agree. Lethality very high in urban environments.

Anyone else like this idea, also i'll edit my post to include those things mentioned on this thread as people post.

Easy, I think, you could just program it so when the tank shoots that type of shell it acts like a gigantic shotgun!

It's too bad the engine won't allow riccochets because that round would have tungsten pellets bouncing all around in an urban area.
And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.

The engine does allow richochets. Shoot at an Abrams' tread cover (not the skirt) and the round will bounce off.

No damage to tanks (well, i haven't personally seen one fired at a tank but i doubt it would do significant damage)

It would probably act like a massive shotgun. I've seen it mentioned before. It would be quite useful in urban maps. Although HEAT rounds can do the anti infantry job quite well....even if they are a little weak right now. Although it would be very useful at taking out infantry in the open...but the coaxial could get them anyway...but the coaxial or whatever it's called isn't that accurate/powerful. It would indeed be a very useful weapon, but it might not be worth it...

Tanks are not "just about right" though. They're really weak in terms of armour and firepower right now, next update will fix that.

What about if you shoot at a LB ?
Would it kill all the passengers on the side you fired at ?

heat would do the joob too good - the problem is, that heat rounds cause massive colleteral damage, where as this giant shotgun rounds (we had a thread about those before) deaccelrate very fast and dont send fragments flyung around the whole place

It is designed to shred buildings and other light fortifications/barricades and such. Wood, light brick wouldn't hold up well. I would personally code it like a huge burst of 50 cal. For urban maps this would IRL be a popular loadout, but i doubt it is heavily issued compared to HEAT and would only have limited rounds in each vehicle.

Oh yeah, it would be really useful against fast moving targets. Never thought of that one. :-D
