Muzzle flash, it's silly

Post by Ugly Duck »

Well, it is! I'm sure most, if not all of us on these forums have seen videos of real firearms in use, and I have uet to see one where massive starry fire goodness comes flying out of the muzzle of a gun. There certainly is a lot more smoke than is depicted though. Some of the older guns, like the AK-47 and RPD(was watching some videos of these) let off the occasional mass flash that we see in games... but it isn't on every shot. BF2, and most other games over do it with their hollywood special effects. Every thing has to blow up or make fire, but truth be told, if PR were to do proper firing effects I think they'd be just as good if not better.

Unfortunately the only way the game could be sold in California was if effect flash hiders were removed. EA had to make some compromises in order to make sales.

You gotta be kidding me! Wow, I guess CA holds all the laws. Everything you see now is ' known to the state of California to cause birth defects' etc. Then again if it came down to it where ea didnt cater to a commie state, it would be illegal for californians to be in possession of bf2?

I wish there was a way to code a muzzeflash only appearing in a dark enough area. If it's brightly lit there would just be a bit of smoke.

The way I see it, you could just make different classes for each map, each class could have a different style of the same weapon. Day maps = muzzle flash very rare, much more visible smoke, Night maps = much more muzzle flash, same amount of smoke.

it does depend on the weapon and ammunition in use though.
some guns do have flame allmost every shot.

Flamethrower! Plenty of muzzle flash!

Wait, they aren't being used anymore, are they?

Too hard to maintain, too vunerable when using, outlawed by geneva convention? Grenades and mg's work just as well...

Found a tipic on another forum that should answer all your questions regarding flamethrowers.

I've seen LMG's let off muzzle flashes, but it was pitch black in a forest...

Flash Supressors are common on every weapon these days, and whats said has been true. Weapons dont spit out flame...

How can anyone trust something that can bleed for up to 7 days, monthly... and not die?

Yeah, it really all depends on the weapon and ammunition type. I've shot my Bushmaster M4A3 at night quite often. It already had a flash supressor intergrated, but even with the flash supressor it can be fairly well seen. However, in the day it's nearly impossible to be seen unless be shot from an unlit area.

Heh, someone suggested to build your own flame thrower on those forums. It's pretty fun to do...but uh...don't try it at home kids!

How about shotguns? They seem to have muzzle flash too, but from what I've seen in real life, there's hardly to be seen.

Along with the fact that most weapons sounds like they were suped-up for the game, when in reality they are a lot less noisy and loud.

ummm not sure by what you mean by "lless noisy and loud" last time i shot my Remington 700(civi ver of M24...actually what it is based off of) it was pretty fucking loud. and yes it really does depend on the weapon, my rifle makes little to no flash... altho i did a few modifications for shooting at night(im a match competition shooter) i have been lucky enough to go out into the arizona desert and wittness a real GM Minigun fire and THAT has a HUGE muzzleflash, more like a big gout of flame. Heck i you fill it up w/ blanks you could probably use it as a flamethrower. cameras also dont always catch muzzleflash, the fps(29.97fps) occasionally misses it, so just keep in mind, video is nothing compared to real life

Ive got a vid that shows you two guns. One being a Colt 1911 .45 and the other being a Desert Eagle .50

Shows you the recoil and the flame. The DE has huge recoil and a big *** flame in slowmotion.

The 1911 has hardly any recoil and no flame just smoke in slowmotion.

Its a high fps video and the ammunition was nothing he has cooked up.

Shotgun wise im sure they do have a bit of flame?? ive seen quite a few game shooters with double barreled shotguns - under and over and side by side and they all seemed to have a bit of flame and not too much smoke - in daylight.

Seeing a muzzle flash in broad daylight is quite possible, it's just not easily seen. In many cases you're better off listening for the shot rather than looking for a muzzle flash.

Oh, and yes, pretty much all weapons are extremely loud. Some may weapons may even cause hearing problems. The only weapons that aren't as loud are ones using sound supressors and subsonic rounds. I always wear ear plugs when I shoot. The only weapon I shoot without ear plugs is the Beretta 92FS. Even then, after an extended period of shooting you start to get quite a bit of ringing in your ears.

I was trap shooting with my Remington 870 last night (20 gauge) and my shotgun and the other peoples shotguns had mostly no flash even at night and it seemed sometimes when I fired I could see something like sparks...? Dunno but there is mainly just smoke. And on my M1 Garand theres only muzzle flash sometimes but everytime I used Greek ammo there was muzzle flash....
