Eggman, what True Combat mod for ET does is they have an official server cvar (or something). Now, technically you may not be able to do that on BF2, but the idea is similar to your Veteran / Recruit server idea, but actually simpler.

Basically you guys could post the acceptable ranges of "Official" PR dev sanctioned settings. Then any server who is running those settings would be allowed to put in their name (Official Settings) or something like that.

Then the other servers can go nuts with their settings and don't even have to comply with "recruit" settings. So you have official setting servers, and "the rest" of the servers.

Just an idea, because I think 2 things are true, 1. servers should be allowed to do whatever they want (within what the game lets them normally do) 2. we need standards in the mod

Yeah that's actually a good idea..So we define "Recruit" and "Veteran" settings. And we request that server admins comply with those settings. If the server name has "recruit" or "veteran" in it, you know it's a server that "officially" complies with the PR settings.

If not, then you are taking your chances, but at least it's "something".

I don't mind admins setting up servers the way they want. They paid for them. I didn't care for ECGN last time I played on it. Nobody worked together and it was just a giant deathmatch. (Not that I dislike deathmatch, but I play UT99 for that...)

Basically, I pretty much stay on the GloryHoundz servers. Fritz (iirc that's the admin's name...) is pretty good with the server parameters. I sometimes play iGi, but I dislike having no armor...

In the end though, I don't mind if GH isn't populated or anything since I have a busy life and if I can't play PR that night I might get some real work done :P

What an idiot. The ECGN community (wich was a huge supporter of vBF2 when it came out) actively "does not" condone teamwork, they say it is not required, even in PR. This pisses me off. Every time I join there server, I always make a scene with the admins how they dont really care about PR and they need to be repromanded of there server. Dont give me that "they pay for it" bullshit. I hate that fucking attitude. I dont give a shit if they pay for it. If your gonna pay money for a god damn server on a fucking computer game, at least respect the way it is intended to play. I think PR should be able to screen people before being allowed to have a public server.
Well said! I could not agree more, seriously there are way too many overrated server like Tactical gamer, Thors, ECGN and a few others *Cough no armour Cough*

I feel that it is the responsability of the players of this mod to do something about the servers that have set a 1 second respawn time, and are trying to make [PR] back into vanilla again.

I quote this one player

Mongol and I came onto a server matching this type of description, just by chance the other day, and were appauled to say the least.
I forget the name. I'm sure the dev team know which one it is.

thoughts?

Perhaps the [PR] Team, can have a quiet word with some of these people - hells... heavy tactics even. If we don't we wont have the slow education and learning process that is necessary and will eventually help BF2 vanilla players make the transition.

alternative, lets have a passworded regular server with large, longer respawn times.

It doesn't really affect me much as i generally hook up with my [PR]RFAD| and occasionally the ARRC enemies for decent teamplay. But for newcomers to this mod i feel sorry for you.

In my experience those who can't deal with [PR] leave, and dont come back.

Lets not have some poor server settings give these newcomers the wrong idea.

Its called something in german like
'Austach dastaneich Noobs'
i know the two words at the beggining are probly not german, just a random guess. But most would be able to indentify the server from that.

Ok guys, that was worse than i server you would see on vbf2. A knife fight would have been more realistic.
There is NO t/w what so ever, teamkillling cant be punished and the server does not auto kick. The spawn times are low so when you are criticaly wounded about 8 seconds before medic can get there.

ECGN i also dont like because it lacks teamplay. These are harsh times fellows. The mod atm is being degraded as a whole by an influx if shit people....not shit players, shit people. If you have some draw to viechles youi get it the worste. I rarely get any chopper anymore bcause i know it will be a Tk fest on the crarrier. Even -=TB=- recently, i have lost respect for. the M4 wielding admins have many times, joined the server as MEC, teamswitched a dead american and join the americans! When ever i get perposely Tked, the Admins only speak english when it suits them ig, whenever your not going "Is there an admin here?"when there is about 4 guys on.
The thing is, it shouldnt be down to the admins but it is. The amout of times iv been TKed for the LB gunz now is stupid.
What disapointed me on ECGN was when some guy Tked a whole load of people(including me) and the admin just kicked me and two other people for no reason. *sigh*.

About the only thing we can really do to "force" settings would be to require that all servers are "ABR" enabled, which some server admins are just NOT in a position to do.
Well, the only problem atm with this idea is that you cannot run both an ABR and a RANKED server at the same time. Its a pain to have to constantly shut one or the other off. It is also really buggy..probably the bf2cc (which they have promised to fix real soon...gasp)

Also, to respond to all of the people complaining about certain servers with fast respawns and certain rules. GUYS...go and drop some money and time into setting up a server, running it and managing it. It is a labor of love with few rewards other than "playing with friends". Alot of you sound like spoiled children biting the hands that feed you. Grow up. If you dont like the server move on to one that satisfies your particular game play. The more rules the more alienation you will have. The basic "personality" of this mod will keep MOST of the idiots away or at least they will not stay for long. To set these servers up takes time, and no one is going to spend the time to set one up if they do not like the mod. Keep up the attitude and maybe you will only have two or three servers to choose from. Just my thoughts.

Cheers

Mongol someone was complainging about you when you got kicked. Im sorry if you did nothing to deserve it. It's hard for admins to know who is telling them the truth and who is lying and its typically a he said she said thing. If your on ECGN type in and ask for an admin, if there is one he will answer and ask what you need. Sorry if I am a MEC and trying to cap Gas STation back and I cannot see Johnny_noob_toob TK you for a Little Bird out on the carrier...

What I would like to see is 2 sets of server standards:
1. Recruit
2. Veteran

And get server admins to include those "keywords" in their server name.

Whatever the case.... more folks playing the mod is a good thing. Some of those "Recruits" might decide they want to become "Veterans" one day.

So let's not get into bashing server admins who are spending their time and money running PR servers please.
Very much support this idea, and very pleased that the discussion has been somewhat productive, which was the original intent behind the idea. Its always a good idea to know what type of server you are getting into, and therefore newcomers and vets know what they are getting into before they join the server.

When you first join a server and you are in those early decision-making days whether you might play the mod again or not, i personally feel its good to have standards. But hey thats just me, i like things to be a steep learning curve as i think it rapidly makes you a better teamplayer.

With a considerable ammount of servers that are out there often empty there is plenty of scope for submitting your ideas to the admins for varied and interesting mapcycles, i.e. :-

Brit vs. PLA only maps.
Vanilla [PR] Maps only (good for getting beginners into the mod).
Insurgent (Militia) maps only.
Extraction maps only.
Airborne resources maps only (one i would like to see to improve my skills).
AAS only.

the list goes on.
