First Impressions & a couple questions

Post by Borsig »

Just loaded this mod up this weekend for the first time.. I havent played BF2 in about a year and a half or so, I got burned out on it fairly quickly. I heard about this one through the grapevine and thought Id give it a try.... Havent read much of the forums here, I'll start after I post.

First impressions -

Sound- Bullet impacts onto nearby surfaces. Nice job. The closest Ive heard to a real bullet impact. Immersion factor is quite nice on this, espically if you have experienced it before.

Weapons - Recoil and controllabilty seem about right save the M4 which seems a bit gamey. Its not quite as controllable as it is modeled here. The only weapons I cant speak personally for is the L85, and a couple of the chinese ones. As far as the sniper weapons go I only have experiece with the SVD and M24, and they seem pretty on as well. Rates of fire are pretty accurate... The 74 seems a bit slow to me, but I havent handled one in a while. I do remember it being slower than a 47 though. The HK21 is a beast recoil wise, as it should be. Too bad you cant model it spitting **** in your face, as thats something it is really bad for. Tracers seem a bit odd from the shooters standpoint, being little dots and not streaks. Also, I think they need to go away in individual weapons such as the Ak's, M4, G3, 53, etc.

I see an increase in teamplay, but not as much as I would like. But thats human nature I suppose. I'd like to find a server where both sides work well at teamwork.

I like the fact there arent 20 snipers per map and back capping flags, flags swapping 100 times a game, etc.

Often locating the enemy shooting at you is difficult which is nice. can be frustating but thats a good thing as I see it. Spawn camping sucks as it does in any game.

It doesnt seem that there are *alot* of people playing this, compared to "straight" BF2. Sometimes there are maybe 2 servers with 40+ players, some of the time. Most of the time it seems that there are a couple servers with 20 or so and thats it... I kind of find that dissapointing, as I like large amounts of players working together on both sides. 10 on 10 or 15 on 15 seems like the maps are empty. Am I missing something? Most players are euro possibly?

Where are the rankings held for this mod? I see guys with ranks but I dont seem to have any... Not that it matters for kit selection or weapons choices, right? everyone gets the same weapons?

All in all it looks promising, I just wish there were more folks playing it... Sort of like r6 Vegas, you can barely buy a server there, simply because ubisoft won't release the damn SADS files.

Wecome mate, teamplay/teamwork is better, alot better, but it does come and go and sometimes takes some finding... (squad hopping).

I think it depends what time zone you are in but on GMT i always find 30+ people in servers, maybe not lots of them, but a few damn good ones.

I like only having a few populated servers, you get to know the players to stick with and avoid.

Actually PR is one of the most popular bf2 mods, if not the most popular. After 0.4 was released the amount of servers and players increased quite a bit so I hope to see the same thing with the release of 0.5.

Rank and stats are "just for fun". You can view your stats inside BF2 the same place you would see them for regular BF2, but you must run the ABR client (http://www.battlefieldranking.net/remos ... 1.exe.html)

You can also see your ranks online at http://gloryhoundz.com/stats/ or http://pr.clanpit.com/stats/

I find that population with .4 has been much better... there are usually atleast 4 or 5 populated servers to choose from... usually theres 1 big 64 (thors brigade or ECGN, recently GHz West has been up more) a few 40-50players with different styles (tactigal gamers, PIT, iGi) and a few smaller ones that have generally better teamplay (GHz South, WNx)

regarding rankings, they are server specific so say you play one server heavily, thors in my case, you will get the ranks when you reach the points needed for them. if you join another server you back to private.

the ranks dont count towards you bf2 rank in any way and dont stop you from requesting kits.

the only limiting factor is that you have to be in a 2-4 man squad depending on teh kit you want.

Actually this isn't true. There could be a server with some kind of private ranking, but most PR servers are running ABR on the PR world. So any server running PR counts towards your PR rank. If you do not run the ABR client though, every time you join a PR server your rank will start at private and you will re-rank up at the beginning of your first round. You have to run the ABR client at least every once in a while so that your BF2 client can accept the rank from ABR.

Hey Borsig,

Welcome aboard mate!

Most of the issues you mention have been addressed for v0.5.

wrt player populations, sad thing is that PR is the most played BF2 mod. EA really screwed the mod dev community with the ranks and unlocks .. players aren't interested in eschewing ranks for free content.

We'll be doing a more concerted effort to promote the mod over time. Good thing about that is that I don't think we're really looking to "recruit and convert" vanilla players anymore... I think we're looking at realism oriented folks who like to pay $19.99 for their games outta the bargain bin. That gives us a little more flexibility to focus on even more realism and teamplay dependencies in the directions we take the mod.

Thanks again for taking the time to make some insightful and constructive comments.
