Pilots in attack choppers and Ground support aircraft (A10s) sit high, it was a design point in the Apache and the A10s when they were originally made, the console is easy to see if you look down, It was developed that way so the pilot/gunner in said aircraft could more easily spot targets to go after or see the target they are after.
As a point brought up for the MG42's, those barrels were made of a less tempered metal than most rifles are today as our machine shops have grossly advanced to make more reliable materials. You'll find other parts breaking, but a barrel will rarely ever melt in extended fire. it can carbonize (phosfor on tracers do this alot) from excess debris in the barrel and misfire, or you'll wear out the rifling in the barrel from use. Other than that I haven't heard of modern weapons running into other severe problems.
