'[R-PUB wrote:Viper5']ACtually, it wouldnt be realistic. Beccause of the threat of basic AA Missiles such as the SA-7 Grail and US Supplied Stingers in Iraq and Afghanistan, AC-130s are only deployed at night now because of a loss during daytime activity. PR currently has no night maps with an airbase.
lol, i just wanted to make the very same post ^^
(also they are only used after ground aa is wiped out mostly)
But you don't need an airfield for it. It will even be not likely that a BF2 map will be realistic, even even if it's huge, when it's got a AC-130 and a airfield for it to take off, cause generally the allied bases where such planes are stay quite retreated from firefight. (not sure about al basra, might work).
Even in maps without airfield, the C-130 might just be a mobile spawn-point non-human controled. Just for air-insertion (Well... but then it would make more sense if players just spawned as paratroopers right?)
In real life the AC-130 was extremely limited usefulness. Not only is it a rarity because of this cost but it is somewhat unwieldy and because it needs to loiter for such long periods of time it is a target for even primitive anti-air. So basically it won't operate near any sort of SAM or AA gun, and probably not against a country with an air force. Even with it's F-15 escorts.
The point is, asside from its vulnerability to AA, although several here would appear to be overstating that vulnerability, is the fact that it is absolutely off the wall lethal. If it travels on the ground, its dead, period. It'd be like combinging the cobra gunship, the artillery strike, and a tank. Only the US has it or anything remotely like it to the best of my knowledge, so it couldn't be balanced out with anything else.
well if we would be implementing a spectre is place, it would have to be on an air superioty map, and to make sure the HUGE MOMA (*cough*) guns arent spammed, they could overheat very quickly, and burn off a lot of ammo. however, when they do fire they would be powerful.
this would mean that gunners will look at the target before they shoot.
this would also mean that sqd leaders could request air strikes, and there would be a marker on the gunners view, which he'she could aim at, making it more accurate. and it would mean it could shoot through that fog that would block sight for the lesser computer users....
as for the hercules, that would be a good idea, but making it a mobile spawn point would mean that people could keep on spamming that spawn point, meaning you would have the whol 36 players in the team jumping at the same place at the same time, suiciding, and moving to the next base.
it would be better to make the pilot have to land and pick up troops to deploy them

its a huge slow target - what is there to be overstated?
the spectres mission doctrine says it is only to be used at night, and only after enemy aa has been dealth with - everything else would be suicide
one thing that could be used would be that all aircraft have realistic flare dispensal, not the vbf2 '3 flares a press' thingy. the ac-130 and c-130 could have a large amount of flares to be dispensed at once.

See the post below you. The amount of anti-laser devices and flares that thing carries is disgusting. Plus, any time you bring in low flying aircraft (helocopters/spectre) the air has already been dealt with. Shoulder fire rockets aren't nearly that common or effective against US made craft as this game implies. They still work, but not 100% like in PR. Plus, a quick volley from a ac-130 will bring down a city block, so its just a tad overpowering to include in this game.

Not sure if it'll ever be included as a player operated vehicle because of map size.
Just for the gee-whiz file: the only AC-130H Spectre combat loss that I know of was from a "silver bullet" shoulder-fired SAM- Spirit 03 over Ras al Khafji in Desert Storm, but that was 16 years ago and countermeasures have probably improved on the Spectre and the improved AC-130U Spooky.
Also, the shoulder-fired IR-guided SAM in Russian Motor Rifle organization is a platoon-level support weapon. One vehicle in each platoon has a gripstock and missiles for it.
Repeated suggestion thread that has gone on long enough.
