CENINJA.. How about I explain this instead of you asking all the questions. You want to mod eh? Modding takes alot of time, learning, and just f'n around. It isn't something that you say, oh I want to do this, and you go do it. You read alot of tutorials, spend many sleepless nights like Rhino, and work your *** off. It's really something that you need to have a love for. Believe me I've taken my hand at modeling, taken my hand at map making, but do to computer limitations and time limitations it was more of a hassle then something fun to do. I'll stick on the idea side of things.

It took me around 1 1/2 years of tutorials, workshops, books until I'm where I am right now(and i'm still learning from them) Modeling takes time and patience. My advice, if your serious about modeling, go download gmax and find tutorials.

Its taken me around 2years from when i first touched the BF2 editor to where I am now, and back then there was hardly any tuts etc. I spend some of my time wrighting quite afew tuts these days, will make more when v0.5 comes out to help you guys too

I had inspiration from that thread about the BFV type maps then I looked at the tuts and thought F'that!
Respect to those who put the time + effort in.
I think I could probably map out some ideas on paper in pencil on what would be good in a map, but farting about with editors and heightmaps....no, sorry. dont know where to start lol.

Yeah, we have some good advice here! Trying and failing is what it's all about. I just read the general "getting started" stuff and experimented from there. Then, if there was something I needed to look up: hey, tutorials!
A piece of advice: reference pictures. No way in hell you'll be able to get anywhere without them. You want to get as many as possible. I asked Bob_Marley to find me some, because he's the man when it comes to guns and pics. I had a couple pics before, but the new ones REALLY helped. As I said, the more, the marrier. I've just posted a thread with my work so far, if you want to have a look (yeah, a bit of self-promotion there, sorry!).
Oh, and make sure to start out with something relatively simple. If you want to make a gun, try a rough version of an M16. They've got lots of basic shapes (boxes/cylinders, etc.) that you can then work on when you want to go more advanced.
And listen to the people here. They know what they're talking about!
EDIT: A link I found to be good for simple weapon modelling: http://psychokillax.tripod.com/html/tutorials.html

More guns and bullets make bad guys go away faster,
which in turn makes everyone in the area safer.
