Optimizing BF Editor..

Post by Wipeout »

Okay I'm looking at mapping like I always have.. Complex, takes time.. Always had the time and the ability to learn the stuff, but always faced computer limitations. So I was wondering if there was anyway to optimize BF editor, to make it run faster (better), and minimize the amount of times it would crash. I remember about 6 months ago working on maps, I'd get the basics of terrain, painted and shaped, have it saved after finishing one part, get into looking at basic layouts for areas and boom dead. I'd lose about an hour or more of work. After it happening multiple times within a 10 minute period in which I lost about 2 complex bunker systems.. (would get a little into it and forget to save) I finally decided that if BF editor was as unstable as that it wasn't worth it..)

Any pointing in the right direction would help.. Would have just asked whino but t3h donkey would have said just save often and l0l it crashes...

Any pointing into a direction or anything w00d help much.. Got quite a few ideas, ranging from helicopter insertions against a town overrun by insurgents, to a tank rampage threw the desert. Anyone can have ideas it takes a mapper to bring them into the playable world..

*stares at rhino* How could you deny t3h 1337 muttrah extraction (night) idea..

here are a list of commands you can use when starting up the editor.

on your BF2 Editor shortcut, right click, propties.

then in the target window, you will want to add these commands to make it run with lower GFx etc, not that increased the speed of the editor on my old PC but it might for you.

+skipMips 3 (this should make textures load at a much lower bit, but thou you will not be able to edit the terrain textures etc very well like this as you wont be able to see them....

+videoOptions low (set this to load low video options, never really tryed it before but guess it will do the same sort of thing if u had low GFx in BF2)

thous are the 2 main ones that will increase the performance of the editor, thou i found that some times the skipmips command sometimes crashed my editor more on load hehe :p

That load mod/level is pretty handy!
Add this at the end of the target line:

+loadMod YourMod +loadLevel YourLevel

obviously change yourmod and your level to whatever your using. It is also case sensitive, and make sure you leave a gap like shown.

example my shortcut looks like this:
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2Editor.exe" +loadMod Road +loadLevel Kandahar

Also, if your just making maps, you can stop the editor loading unwanted 'modules' such as the animation editor or material editor, etc. Should speed things up.

You only really need Terrain Editor and Level Editor.

GoTo tools > Add in manager, and select it to only load:

Console UI
Import
Level Editor
Terrain Editor

Set all others 'unchecked' for autoload.
