RAM matters a LOT!

Post by Demio »

Just a quick heads-up. If you are having performance problems with PR, buy more RAM.

I had 1GB and I couldn't play Al Basrah AT ALL. Now I have 2GB and it plays smoothly on the same settings...

;)

P.S.: It will also help if you turn off the swap file :P

I've had the same thing with different games (I got 2 gb of ram before I got PR), like Medieval II. With 1 gb, sieges were hell to play, going at only a couple of fps, but they ran smoothly with 2 gb. It's not that expensive to get more either, and you might just be able to scavenge pcs you had in the past for it ;) It's easy to disconnect and plug in, even though it's best to have ram of the same speed 'n stuff, it works fine for me.

RAM akhbar!

I run with 1GB of RAM, and all the maps run smoothly for me. Then again, I'm also running with 2 Processors (4.7GHz) and a 256MB 7600GS video Card. Not sure if any of that makes up for the lack of RAM I have :-?

Its a mix of RAM and how undefragged one's computer is.

EDIT: that was @ Irish, not you Animal

Ram will always provide the biggest performance increase for gaming.

Swapping is when you don't have enough ram and the system has to use the page file (hard drive) as ram which is slow as fuck and if your HDD light is always blinking when you are getting lag that is what is causing it and more ram will fix this issue.

Or lowering settings like:

Terrain*
Geometry
Lighting*
Texture*
View Distance

*Lowering these is recommended, as you're not as disadvantaged if you lower these. Lowering the rest isn't recommended as you can't see as far and therefore will be very disadvantaged.

I have a hosed Gateway laptop that I think has 512 mB RAM in it. Is there any chance I can rip that out and slam it into my current rig?

With out thread jacking too much I was wondering if I could ask anyone for help with some performance problems I'm having...

I can play fine, but every one I talk to says I should be able to run higher settings and can't explain my poor preformance.

I currently run on med with all dynamic stuff on low, and it just barely gives me a decent frame rate.

2.5Ghz P4 with 2 gig ram and an AGP 7800GS

If someone knowledgeable had the time to PM me about it Id really appreciate it.

(stuff like reformatting/defragging hasn't helped.)

I'm no expert, though I would recommend taking a look at Tweakguides for some helpful stuff.

Demio please elaborate.. are you saying, you see a performance increase if you turn OFF the windows page file / swap file???

I run 2GB RAM... so you are saying the RAM requirements never exceeds this? For if it does its crash time.

Thanks for any feedback.

When you have 2GB of RAM it's safe to turn off the swap file :)
