Is it worth it?

Hi all. Im a Red Orchestra man myself. In fact someone posted about PRM on the RO forums. I never play BF2 because I dont like the fact it takes half a magazine to put a guy down.

I have been reading alot about PRM and it sounds really interesting. However I really dont need another damn game to play. But they are so much fun. And I really like games with a high level realism.

I know its a free mod and I know the basic BF2 can be found cheap on amazon. I guess I am looking for some outside influences to push me to go ahead and buy BF2 and play PRM.

Is it worth it?

I'm all about the little things. Its the little things in a game that really make it or break it for me. Is it worth it for me to go ahead and put some time into expiriencing the little things that are in this game that make you go "oh cool!" ...? Are there enough of the little things to make me want to come back?

I would like others opinions.

And also a couple of questions by the way.

Can you lean?
Does the AT-4 have the 9mm round that matches the ballistic trajectory of the rocket?
And after reading the IGN ariticle about version .5...what the heck are tank crews doing with a driver, gunner and a MG gunner? MG gunner with a tank? Whats that all about? This isn't WW2.

I'm not quiet sure about all that, but I can tell you it's worth it. And its not a half a mag to put a guy down. 1 or 2 shots should do the trick. Comparing this to other realistic games I've played, it's pretty good. There are still some unrealistic parts in it but those will probably be worked out in the next couple of updates. Anyways for PR, I give it a 9.75 out of 10. I prefer this over POE and OPK and all the other big time mods for BF2 out there.

Yes. This game is very fun and exciting. The teamwork possible is among the best in multiplayer games. If there was a funner FPS I would be playing that instead. PR has found a good balance between sim (ArmA) and fun (respawn, tactics, mutiple roles)

Can you lean?

No. The engine forbids it. I don't find the lack of lean to be a huge problem since how often do you lean IRL? (Left anyway)

No. It's a rocket launcher. Just shoot it.

The moderm MBT has a crew of 3 or 4 persons. Take the Abrams for instance. There is a driver, a gunner, a commander and a loader. When supporting infantry against infantry targets it is common practice to unbutton. The commander and the gunner have a M2 and a M240 mounted on the tank which they use against infantry targets. This is not WW2, this is Iraq.


Did I mention the combined arms? The most realistic insurgents vs a better equiped USA I have seen in a game? The awesomeness of being deployed via chopper to take strategic point all the while using voice comms to communicate? The intensity of driving a convoy protecting a VIP through hostile insurgent territory dodging RPGs, IEDs and VBIEDs?

Not really all that impressed with games these days. It's all "that should have been there in the first place". That goes for both graphics and gameplay features.

Only reason why I join in is because of the community. It is also the one thing that makes me go threw the roof and curse like nobodies buisness. Suddenly you find yourself with no communication, no coordination, no teamwork, no nothing.

And then we have the moments where some odd 20-30 people come together and kick the living **** out of 20-30 other some players with excellent communication, coordination, teamwork and having fun on top of that.

These people are what make me go "wow" for now. It's enough for me.

Oh trust me, it's worth it. The game isn't completely realistic thanks to the limited BF2 engine(instant 2d ironsights and other minor things) but the Devs have done an amazing job with what they have to work with and have made a pretty realistic game.

The animations and movements are not quite as realistic as RO but the scale, the maps, the equipment, and most importantly the teamwork make it a much better experience than playing RO. Hell, the teamwork alone makes it worth it.

Honestly though, this is not the best place to get a fair opinion. Generally speaking, if you post here it's because you really enjoyed the mod.

I play RO also, but the teamwork is what makes this game for me. It is so much easier to communicate and work with a squad since you know where your buddy is at all times. RO is physics wise and what weapons are in an actual infantry unit, more realistic but I found it hard to stay with certain people or work as a group after the first respawn. Cause then you are off to go find where they are and who is left. This mod is the only reason i think anyone should get BF2. I could only imagine what these devs could do with the Unreal II engine or even maybe source engine .

There will be times when you get frustrated since I'm sure you are use to one bullet kills, but minus any lag/hitbox issue some guns are pretty much 1 shot or 2-3 shot kills. Plus the basic rifleman isn't a bolt action . One last thing, Jihad cars are the bomb... no pun intended

I don't know, I've seen some pretty PO'ed people come on here and say how bad PR is.... But, your right, this is a pretty biased group of people when it comes to PR, judging how we are actually checking this post and leaving comments. If you want some real feedback try posting something on ModDB or some other mod forums and you'll probably get some good feedback there.

I guess it depends on first impression. If someone joins a game and instantly notices TKing and no teamplay, they probably wont play PR again. I got a good experiance when I started playing PR so I stayed.

Some people just do not like the BF2 engine and netcode, and I don't blame them.

Without a doubt, yes.

I haven't played RO (I detest WW2 themed games), but coming from an Infiltration background I would imagine you might miss/expect the following features:

• leaning
• a delay when going prone
• weapon collision
• free-aim
• removal of the BF2 radar

If there is a delay when you go prone, how come PR hasn't mirrored it yet??? I assume there is some problem with it then?

I assume that the problem is hard-coded. Otherwise, I would not be able to understand while it is still an issue.

Fishw0rk put it very nicely since he has experiance with both mods.
I say if you are an absolute stickler for realism you might be better off staying with RO. But I have heard time and time again that aside from clans/tournments you are hard pressed to find a community or game or mod that provides as much teamwork as Project Reality does. You might not find it within the first day or two of playing, but if you start posting on the forums, or get in the right squads you will notice the most realistic amount of teamwork out there!

In fact I don't care how realistic a game is, it's the teamwork that makes it truly realistic (you can't get any more real then depending every moment on you and your squad =) )

I play RO as well and would love to see the lean and prone delay and the MG limited arc but we can't have them.
That said, I will simply repeat what others have said about the teamwork.
The new release has brought many new players so some games are quite chaotic and don't represent PR very well.
But if you look at the Xfire and player recomendation thread and get a few names to look for, you will find the teamplay worlds above RO and the combined ops and options for manuevering as well.

It is worth it !!

Thanks for the input guys. I have never really expirienced true teamwork in RO. Bullet penetration, eh? That sounds nice too.

There do not seem to be too many immature haXorZ types here either. Thats always nice.

I have played both mods extensively (I then bought RO on Steam when it switched engines). If it is extreme realism you are after then as other posters have said then RO might be your game (along with Armed Assault - I play that too - I used to make loads of missions for OpFlash), however there is one thing that sets this mod apart from any other right now, and that is the way that it encourages and rewards teamwork.

We were playing in a squad last night, four from my group (CGA/CoFR) and two pickups, and if I tell you that it is the only game (group-only Opflash Co-Ops excepted) where I have been able to divide a squad of six into two fire teams and advance between flags with bounding overwatch then you'll get an idea of the immersion that this game offers.

True it is not realistic in the sense that you mean, but the level of immersion is HUGE!
