Should the mini-map be removed? Note: you will still be able to view the main map with the 'M' key (or whatever you mapped it to).
I definitely think this would add to the experience. Personally, I use the mini-map all the time for looking where I'm going. This will annoy me a lot, but I'm willing to go for it because it sounds like a good idea. I'll just have to relearn how to play without a minimap.
NOTE: Assume that the main map and mini-map will function as is without removing any kind of player dot icons or vehicles.
NOTE: However this poll turns out, please be advised that we may not go with what the majority ruling is.
If the pulling the map out full screen with all the friendly indicators is still in, I think all the players can adjust either way. After all, it just means you have to press m if you get lost or need to check for friendlies.
I would like to see it removed for infantry, but if it could be kept for aircraft and tanks. That would be great because when your flying around in a helo or a plane opening the big map could spell death for you and your crew. Not only that but I think all aircraft are equiped with some sort of GPS system. But I don't know if it can just be limited to aircraft.
Out. This mod wants reality. Soldiers in reality do not carry handheld super radars.
Nametags also out. However nametags gone would require the drawdistance of all entitys in game to be increased allot (view of people/tanks/pods etc etc further away).
Then again this mod does not want one life which is also reality because of gameplay.
So i do think compromise is needed but not in the case of nametags and radar.

IRL you (obviously) have much better senses and therefore better situational awareness (someone correctly brought this up in the other thread on this subject) about who is around you and where you are, professional soldiers are usually studied in the area in which they'll be opperating arent they?
so, as i sit here flicking my cursor back and forth between options i wonder if the mini map can be restricted to a much smaller area, like the smallest one you see when changing the size of the map, so that you can only see friendlies within a smaller area, thus giving you some sort of situational awarness.
Like brokenarrow said, in RL, you know whats around you. Yes, in game you can see for the most part, but your not TRUELY surrounded by sounds, etc...Therefore i agree with the minimap staying, but in a smaller radius
i dont agree. still.
In reality the only way you know if your team is near you is with vision which is in the game and with sounds (unles they stink) which is also in the game. If you turned up your volume to realistic levels then im sure youd know exactly where people are.
The difference is that in games people do not constantly look around them because there life is at no risk.
If an ememy is spotted your team can either shout where they are (which could get them killed), crawl over and tell you or use the headsets which most troops have now and simply tell you quietly. We have teamchat and we have radio commands so i dont see the problem.
As far as sounds go im hoping PR will not have such weapon fading issues as BF2 and in general sounds will be allot sharper and more realistic. Hand held super radar has no place in a reality mod.
i still think a minier mini map with restricted capability (not being able to show enemies on it) is still in the best interest of gameplay and even, arguably, realism, since listening through speakers and looking at a monitor restricts your situational awareness.
My vote is to get rid of it for the grunts and land vehicles, yet keep it for helo's, planes, and squad leaders. ( Is it possible to code it so that it is available to some players, but not others?).
Most grunts would have a map, which the full screen one in the game could replicate, but only the squad leaders would have a GPS unit, or something like that. It might not show all the detail that the in-game one shows, but you should be able to "dumb it down" a bit.
With the helos/ planes, they wouldn't have a map with the same detail as what is in game, but they would have a HUD/console display giving land info that has been beamed in from satellite.
As for pushing back draw distance and dropping nametags/ flag markers, you have to look at the lowest common factor here. Not everyone will have a card that can support a draw distance of 500 metres on a slightly misty day, or 1000 metres on a fine day. I think we should keep the nametags and flag makers, even if it isn't even close to being realistic. After all, who wants to blunder around a map you haven't studied, with no idea where to go, only to be taken out by a stray bullet from a firefight just in front?
I think for game play the mini map is very useful for direction bearings and quick referencing spotted targets.
However for the sake of realism, if you can remove it but have player bring it up full screen like OFP (Operation Flashpoint) then thats cool with me. Would make it much more important to move slowly and plan your attack.
If the mini-map is removed, is it possible to provide a pop up compass (similar to OFP)? This would allow players to easily work out which direction they are pointing in the game and would be a great addition to this mod.
Here is a pic of the OFP high definition compass used in some mods i like...
I think this is the biggest downfall to getting rid of the minimap. The object sighted feature in BF2 was designed around being able to use the compass rose to call out the enemy. (I would assume on the real battlefield if a soldier reports an enemy tank all soldiers in area are alerted?)
Take out the mini map spotting and now you may have to revert back to the "f-key" communications. Unless you put the images on the large map...which still give the info, but makes people activly look when someone spots the enemy.
