SmokeScreen

Post by Maxthered »

I was playing on EJOD Desert and my team and I were using smoke grenades to advance through the desert, and I thought what if the commander had the ability to place a smoke screen on the battlefield so the troops could advance to the next objective. What do you guys think about it?

The use of artillery screening smoke has been suggested before on the dev forums. We're looking into it. :)

Well, you wouldn't know about it if it weren't on the public forums. Next time you have an idea just do a search to see if it has been brought up already. Welcome aboard. :)

i like this idea but what if it was mounted on the back of a humvee? like this

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/m1059.htm
(the humvee pics not the apc)

and for the lazy ones heres a little info :D

CAPABILITIES:

Produces 90 minutes of mobile, visual obscuration without refueling
One platoon (6 systems) can screen a 1 km x 5 km area
Uses any standard Army fuel (including diesel, JP4, JP8, MOGAS)
Can operate -25°F to 120°F at altitudes up to 8,000 ft.
Description
The M157A2 Smoke Generator Set (SGS) and M1059/M1059A3 Smoke Generator Carrier (SGC) produce large area visual smoke screens on the move. The M157A2 and M1059/M1059A3 use dual pulse jet engines, operating on standard Army fuels, to produce large white clouds of fog oil vapor which defeat visual-range observation and tracking methods, including lasers. The M157A2 and M1059/M1059A3 consist of 5 major components: Two (2) M54A2 Smoke Generators, an Air Compressor Assembly, a 120 Gallon Fog Oil Tank, a Fog Oil Pump Assembly, and a Control Panel. When mounted on an M1037/M1097 HMMWV with the M284A1 Mounting Kit, these components comprise the M157A2 SGS. When mounted on the M1059/M1059A3, variants of the M113A2/M113A3 Armored Personnel Carrier, these components comprise the M1059/M1059A3 SGC.

The M54A2 is a pulse jet engine which burns any mid-viscosity fuel (diesel, JP4, JP8, etc.) to vaporize fog oil which recondenses in the atmosphere to produce a thick, white cloud which provides visible obscuration. Each M54A2 is capable of vaporizing 40 gallons of fog oil in a one hour mission.

it would be a great thing to use in the field to do things like cover a flag while capping, retreat, and invading citys/desert and stuff like that

is it possible to do?

I'm gona try to find that video of the huey with the smoke gun on it, it basically looks like it's droping a lot of flares but they're a ton of special smoke bombs. It created a HUGE smoke screen. I'll try to post it asap.

Note: It's a new huey, not Vietnam era.

I think a helicopter with a smoke screen on it would be awesome. It would help with teamwork too. I'd love to have a guy in my squad in a helicopter fly over on my command and drop a nice big smokescreen in front of me so my squad can move up or retreat under cover.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tllB1HpJM2k watch it around six minutes and you'll see an armored vehicle use its smokegrenade launchers.... nothing like in game, that is a proper smoke screen produced in an instant!
In the video there is alot of other cool stuff such as AT4 impacts, 40mm autocannon etc etc...

CR2 has the ability to produce smoke by pumping diesel into the exhaust manifold, the driver can select left or right. They are also fitted with the standard smoke dischargers for chucking a screen out some distance.

Not sure about other nations MBT's though.

squad needs a smoke barrage to get to a location across open ground, then they contact the commander, commander then tells all squads to smoke a certain location (we now have an xy grid for this!)

I just saw this on youtube and I thought that someone in the back of a humvee could use a item like this for the smokescreen.

Smoke acts weird in Bf2, it spreads out on all sides instead of wafting with the wind, and it hardly ever wafts up, so you wind up with degraded concealment from snipers at higher elevations

once more, please check out this movie at 6 minutes, that is how the smoke launchers on APCs and tanks should work, smoke instantly no need to wait for it to build up.
