VOIP is essential.
Hand signals are okay in game, but u need to have a bird available to make proper use of the hand signals, if u needs to command an entire team.
Also birds in specific formations can do the job of communication. In example a bird squad can make one formation as a kind of initial question to start up the squad communication. And another formation can be used as replying and so on. (It will take some time in the beginning though so try to practise on a single player server at first hand)
Short Example.
Two small birds holding the altitude steady at 48 feet in an 85-degree angle towards the primarily advancing full and/or half sized enemy squad formation is most common used as a kind of question mark indicating that the squad has a question.
This kind of formation behaviour nearby the squad’s own commander, placed on the deck of a carrier will initiate a communication conversation between the commander and the bird squad.
The commander can then use his/hers hand signals and/or weaponry fire to indicate if he/she has the time and the energy to communicate with the bird squad.
For example a “No I don’t have time or energy to communicate with you at this very moment”, from the commander could be a very well-placed rocket into one of the two birds cockpits.
On the other hand a commander suicide on the carrier deck could mean ”Yes I now have the time and energy to communicate with you at this very moment”.
Anyway u really need to get the "Hand Signal" dictionary before u get u self into using the hand signal system embedded in Project Reality. I would advise u to get a book in your native langue first.
Especially cause there’s been a lot of hand/formation signal changes with the new 0.5 patch.
It really does make sense if you play round after round, 36 hours straight, no food, no light and only drinking coffee.
I’m more kind a ground squad leader and i always use the hand grenade signal if i want to communicate and share opinions with the squad members.
Way to do this is of course to drop a hand grenade in a position where everybody in the squad will get hit. And this signal means “Time to Talk about our hand grenade tactics guys”.

Define irony. A bunch of guys playing PR year after year. A game teaching initiative as the prime mover.
However, in regard to EA, these guys never took the initiative.

To the o.p.
Its really really really really nice.
But you will get away with out it since so many squads don't use it now. I can be shy at times too but its really nice to have a squad thats talking.
Are you sure that it wont work?
I use my playstation 2 usb headphones with ripped out ear piece along with my X-Fi card just fine....
If its a USB set it is probably just recognized as a different card that you can assign to recording VIA sound properties in the control panel no?

As long as you can hear the rest of your squad talk (You have VOIP turned on, even if you don't use a microphone) and are prepared to communicate with the in-build radio commands (Q-rosette or even just page-up for "yes", page-down for "no") then you should have a very fine time. Even in my "VOIP/TMWRK" squad, that is all I ask for, since I think there are lots of valid reasons why someone who is otherwise committed to tactical play doesn't want to speak out loud. I think different squad leaders are picky to different degrees about that though, so a "VOIP-only" squad, for example, might be keen to kick non-talkers.
In my opinion, if you aren't prepared to at least listen to and communicate with your squad (this doesn't require a mic), then why play a game using the crappy BF2-engine? You might as well play something using the much superior (read as prettier, less buggy and more moddable) source or quake engines where a lack of communication generally matters a lot less

The verbal brutality found on forums is often reminiscent of the physical brutality found in first person shooters, except that forums allow those with slower reflexes to join the carnage without a handicap.

I don't like to talk much because i don't speak good english and I'm quite shy anyway, but i do talk when it is necessary. Some Squad Leaders kicks people out of squad if they don't talk constantly and i think that is kind of stupid. Just coulpe of minutes ago that happen. After 3 minutes of playing SL started to demand people to talk, so i left before he could kick me. And anyway, how can you concentrate into play and win if you just talk and talk and when you don't talk you have to listen someones stupid joke or something?
I like it when squad leader only says what is necessary and squad members don't have to keep talking if they don't like to. Of course it's good if they warn about threats and so, but no pressure to squad members. Pressure and responsibility to squad leaders and commander only.
You can have good teamplay even when not talking much. Right?
