No. Simply being a D3D10 card will not make games run faster than any D3D9 card.

It depends on the game, the card, and the user's computer setup.

I know games that run better on a Voodoo 3 than a GeForce 7800.

Most likely, any D3D10 card will be better than a D3D9 card, and will run games faster spec-wise. But a D3D9 game will not take advantage of D3D10 features even if run on a D3D10 card.

It's just like a D3D6-8 game running on a D3D9 card. It's just backwards compatible, and doesn't use newer features.

My opinion would be to wait and not upgrade to a D3D10 card until a game that you really want to play requires one. The hardware isn't even out yet (well, not really) and games supporting it are a long way off.

Why? The D3D10 Pipeline is so different than previous versions that it will be harder for developers to be backwards compatible with D3D9 hardware. So they will keep developing for D3D9 cards for several more years. Remember, a lot of people still have integrated **** cards or GeForce 2s or GeForce FX cards (arguably worse than GeForce 2s....).

In fact, the only game that I know of that is developing a D3D10 version is eVe Online. And they are still developing the D3D9 version along with it....

'[R-DEV wrote:eggman']BF2 is a DX9 engine game. I doubt EA will upgrade it to DX10. As a result PR will remain a DX9 game on the BF platform.
EA and other hugetastic dev/pubs like Ubisoft can't even release a finished DX9 game or handle patching properly. There's ZERO chance they would ever treat the community - who already paid them - to a free/paid DX10 port, whatever that would entail. I imagine lots of painstaking work resulting in more bugs and very little reward or enhanced graphics.

A proper DX10 title cannot be 'ported' from DX9 and must be built specifically for DX10 from the start, which is what Crytek has been doing with Crysis for the last few years. I'll be grabbing my 8900 series in June...

Supreme Commander,

Company of heroes is NOT a Direct x 10 game, they are coming out with a DX10 patch for it. Same with Flight Sim x and Halo 2, as well as the EVE: online mmorpg game among quite a few more getting DX10 patches. The only games right now that have been built from the ground up using DX10 are Crysis, Alan Wake, and Supreme commander (Reverts intself to lesser visuals when run on a DX9 system) as well as Quake Wars (it still runs on DX9) world i conflict. I dont think helgate london and shadow run are DX10.

Dont know where you are getting June from for the 8900 series. No official or even unnofficial word has been said yet on the G81 cores, except for the 8600's wich will be out sometime in late march/early april.

Bottom line.... what would this thing do for PR ?
And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.

unless source code is released, nothing. Except according to that thing more time spent on game than displaying objects.

Not in this generation of games, no. Games that have completely seperate DX10 and DX9 renderers will likely be slightly faster with DX10, and can therefore be slightly better-looking, but it's not gonna be a night-and-day difference in this generation. Some extra fps and some extra eye candy, most likely.

The really interesting part of DX10, which will only show fully in a couple of years, is the major changes to the API - the tools developers use to make 3d graphics. The major new thing, which is really goddamn cool, is the geometry shaders. It's not easy to explain right away what they do to people who usually don't care about tech, but in short they make it easier to create effects that modify in-game geometry. Doesn't sound very impressive, but it's gonna make lots of completely new and awesome stuff possible, graphics-wise. :)

So, should you want to get a DX10 card now, then? The answer depends on how hard-core you are in your appreciation of computer game graphics. If you're the kind of gamer who'd buy a 40-inch 1080p HD tv just to play Gears of War "the way it should look", you're probably already owning one. If you care mainly about decent fps and good graphics in general, I'd suggest waiting a while for prices to drop, if possible - there isn't really a great need for DX10 just yet and I doubt the difference will be easily appreciable even on Crysis (and any difference there is will probably be a result of them taking out cool shaders from the DX9 version, not that they've made stuff for DX10 that DX9 can't handle.. I got to play Crysis for a while back in August, running on DX9 hardware, will be interesting to see if any of the more impressive shaders are missing when it gets released ;) ).

If you're buying a card today regardless, though, you should definately try to get a DX10 card. There will be games in the next generation that *will* require DX10. But not really any this year.
