A proposal To DuckHunt
I was playing with DuckHunt earlier today on DevFile & I brought up the topic of what the future holds for Al Basrah, and he told me that Al Basrah has around 2,500 objects, now by objects I guessing he meant, buildings, cars, & decorative objects such as rocks, barrels etc...
With Al Basrah being one of the most system stressing maps in PRMM, I couldn't help but think, what if he removed some of the smaller non-important objects. Just eliminated some of the smaller aspects of the map, perhaps dropped the object count down to 2,000, might it improve FPS & make the map less laggy?

I don't think he should nerf anything on his map just to accomodate the minority who can't run it with out lag due to their low end systems.

minority? that's an understatement my friend. Some of us just simply dont have the money readily available to go dropping it on 1k+ machines to be able to run the uberl33t games when before we were doing just fun. The majority of BF2 players is actually the minority of people that you so happily refer to.

I have always lagged on Al Basrah but much less so in .5 than before.
Dropping some unlooked objects to lessen the lag and make more people have a better experience is a sound idea.
It's not nerfing the map to remove a thousand or so bushes, rocks and crates if it's going to improve 30-60% of the player's frame rates.
I would like to see a version w/o aircraft and all the attendent BS that goes with aircraft but that would be nerfing the map for gameplay reasons.
Although, I think the absence of the A10 would lower the lag a lot since it seems whenever that thing is around me I lag more.
I run a lower end system and accept the lower performance as the game advances.
If this map lags too badly to play then try another, but if all lag badly you simply need a better PC to play PR.
That said, less bushes in streams would not impact the immersion factor in any great way.

My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.

Yeah, if less objects would make people stop bitching in global chat about lag, then I'm for it. And if any suggestion involves getting rid of the A-10, then again, I'm all for it.

Err... I don't lag on any map other than Al Basrah. That's not a system problem. It's not horrible lag. But when I need to do something like turn around quickly or I do a strafing run with the Cobra's hydras it'll seize up for a second or two. It makes close quarters combat very difficult. So if some of the superficial objects that just make the map look pretty in areas rarely traveled could be removed to increase performance I don't see why they shouldn't be.

ye, just like 20 to 50 odd meters off the view distance on basrah would really solve alot of the lag most ppl get. We will probaly do that for v0.6 to keep the maps to the same hardware requiremant standard. Its really stupid to have 90% of the maps run fine on your settings and then have like 1 or 2 maps you need to turn down your gfx settings for to play.

I don't get it. I run fine on all maps now, including Al Basrah. And my computer's far shittier than the ones most of you have I'm sure.

2GB RAM
AMD 64 4000+
ATi X1800XT
Creative X-Fi Gamer
All settings on high. 6x AA, 100% Draw Dist. Sound set to ultra high with EAX on.
And my god, Al Basrah runs like a goddamn pig. All other maps? Fine. Never ever ever drops below 30FPS, and usually it's 50+ reaching up to 100. But on Basrah I experience some extreme stuttering. I've had like, 3 second screen freezes where I was just about to press the restart button on my computer because I thought it had crashed when the sound came back on. The FPS without stuttering is actually fine, but the problem is that when I do simple things like, say, zoom into iron sights, or I simply move the mouse, bang. 0.5-1 second complete freeze, quite often. (Although it seems to get better the more I do that action). Might not sound like a lot but it ends up in me dying a helluva lot of times. I've crashed a BH with 2 other guys in it because I had a massive freeze and had no idea what was going on, and an A10 also due to stuttering.
So yes, I think this map has problems. Will I change my graphics options each time it comes onto rotation? Hell no. I really don't think it's good enough for that, at all.
That's just my input. I know that several other people I've spoken to when the map comes on say they have big FPS troubles on it also. I would not call it a minority.

Yeah, not to be a whiner, but I could run all maps on high 1600x1200 but had to turn everything down to medium just so that I wouldn't have to leave a server everytime Al Basrah comes up. And even now, it stutters a bit in the city area, mostly near the Facility flag. When I had all my settings on high, that area would make me freeze up for seconds at a time, making it completely unplayable. I really dun want to hafta additionally turn down my draw distance just to accommodate this one map (no offense.)

i have:
Radeon 9200 Saphire Card
768 MB Ram
1.59 GHz
All settings on Low.
i seem to only find Basrah choppy at most for the first 5 mins.. but the majority of the time i am ok. Maps seem alot better than .4 but some are still a bit choppy. I find myself always having connection interuption problems when i try and revive a buddy for 1-2 secs but nothing major.
i still wonder how my system works with bf2.

So much terrain in Al Basrah is unused, such as the north part of the airport, above the runways.
There are bushes in the water, that you can only see when you jump into the water, and your camera goes beneath for a second. They don't need to be there.
Don't even talk about us lowering our drawdistance. Anything but 100% takes away from your ability to fight.
