Voice Communication via TS <=> Built-in VoIP

Post by General_J0k3r »

many ppl have problems with the built-in VoIP (like myself :( ) like erratic disconnects (annoying like hell) i also believe it contributes quite a lot to server load. so i'd like to make a suggestion:

i think it is possible to control teamspeak via php. i believe you have php scripts running anyway, so that shouldn't be a problem. server owners could set up a ts server additionally which is linked to the PR server. ts servers don't need too heavy machines and bandwith usage is also comfortable. then each squad could get a channel automatically. i think (not sure) it is also possible to implement cross-channel communication like the SL-Commander communication we have now with the built-in VoIP.

If i'm right about the server load this could also free resources for some other fancy stuff :D .

if you're interested, i could research that matter further in regards to working scripts and/or how to do it, objects and all that stuff to REALLY see if it's feasible.

sounds like a decent idea, but i have no idea if it'll work, the only snag may be server owners may not want to spend any more of their cash on a TS or an Vent server, and not all providers through in a free ts/vent...

the crappyness of the bf2 voip (and the engine itself :D ) makes me think that you might be able to run the ts server parallel to the bf server on the same machine and still have less load. would need some testing though.

i actually think that the ingame voip is quite decent for public games and has a much smaller delay than teamspeak

I was playing the other night and it seemed half my squad was using TS and half BFVOIP. I was one that was using the BFVOIP and it felt like I was being left out of the loop. It eventualy caused me to loose interest in playing and I left.

I do not like using vent/TS becuase every server is going to have its own vent/ts server. I do not know which server I am going to be playing in until I go in and see what server has people, what map it is, etc. I dont want to then have to minimize the game go find the IP and then try to connect to a vent/TS server. Then if a server has auto balance on it will switch you to other team and you will have to leave the game and switch channels in vent/TS. Or on a new map you are in a different squad and have to leave the game and switch channels... It is jus alot of extra uneeded steps inorder to use a system that is already implemented into the game itself.

The BFVOIP system allows for me to just join the game and go and the only problem I have had with it was due to using the onboard sound (which is always lacking at best).

I lag like crazy on VIOP. It cuts in and out and often seems to be the cause for 1-5 second freeze ups.
I rarely use TS but when (3FJ) was around I used it with them and had no problems.
Jeeves has a point but if you use both TS and VIOP to get cross squad comms going it would be worth the hassle.
The 90 second start time seems custom made for this.
And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.

it is actually quite annyoing being in a squad and talking to people who are not in your squad via ts - because there is so much chatter that the ts people often dont know wether something was directed at them or not - of course there is always the option to do it like in bf2 and set a key to activate voice (but in ts i prefer voice-activation)

i understand the problem with the chatter. but you could make a channel for each squad.

concerning my prob with voip: its in fact quite weird. when i connect to a server with voip enabled (its all completely perfect w/out voip) in 95% of the attempts the map will load, i klick join game and almost promptly i get the "Theres a problem with your connection" and then i'll find myself back in the menu with the "connection to the server has been lost" msg. when i try to reconnect i will get the "failed to connect. check ur network connections and try again" msg each time i try for about 4 to 5 minutes.

point is: i don't loose packets. ping <server-ip> /l 4096 /t no packets lost, ping with normal size neither, no heavy ping spikes (up to 80ms with normal packets, 110ms with big packets; those spikes are VERY rare, 2 times in 20 minutes something like that and not connected to the disconnects), i can tracert the server, everything seems fine. only battlefield refuses to connect :( . as i said, i don't have any problems with voip off.

my rig:

a8n-sli with athlon64 3200+
geforce 7800GT Gainward
1GB OCZ Gamers Edition Enhanced Latency 2-2-2-5
Samsung SATA Drives

I use onboard sound. network connection is wlan, though i also have the issue when i got my pc wired. normal network card is disabled in bios. audio settings are on software, low quality.
