Looking at enemy GPS

Post by Sgt.Ljung »

First of all, I like that the scan and UAV has been disabled. However, why not make it possible to look at enemy GPS after they are down? I don´t know if this is possible in the engine, but still...
The idea is that if you kill an enemy officer and pick upp his kit you should also be able to look at his GPS and see where the enemy is. In order not to upset the balance of the game to much you would have to be standing still while looking at it, if you move it disappears.
One way of simulate it, if it can´t be done any other way, could be to use the code for the scan for the GPS-feature.
In the way of teamplay, I think this would add, since the person looking at the GPS could report the enemy positions to the commander who could relay it to the other squads.
What do you think?

Or make it, so if you kill the enemy officer, you pick up some sort of laptop/list containing enemy positions in the nearby area, similar to UAV, but only gets displayed once, so you can take a peek at the spinmap, then the dots dissappear, same if you "manually" spotted them

nice idea. but i think those GPS systems aren't really realistic in the first place, aren't they? i think the way it is right now provides for a good balance.

I would have to agree with General_J0k3r that the in-game GPS is already rather unrealistic, in that it shows the positions of your teammates. Although I like the idea of being able to pick up your enemies GPS and look at your enemies positions, again I have to agree again with General_J0k3r with the current balance it provides with the game.

Too complicated and unrealistic to implement.

Well, you could just take away the GPS spinmap and the 3D map (flags on screen, if you dont know, whats that, and other). Thats realistic. Then you would have to find the way to the enemy CPs using only the map provided (M key).

Similar systems are already beeing used. Platoon commanders with a palmtop or PDA ( cant keep the 2 apart ) with live footage from UAV's above them. Maybe a second of 2 / 3 delay since the information is relayed from the control station.

There is also a GPS system that show where friendly veh and GPS units are, I just read about it in a book about the battle for Fallujah.
Enemy intl would be a great addition to the game but it would have to be done carefully with lots of limitations on it.

blue force systems have been used in combat and have been used at NTC. http://www.gdc4s.com/content/detail.cfm ... f2f8ebd0f6

Not keen on the original idea really as it seems a bit complicated and lacking in much benefit for gameplay.

The only i idea i had for this, is perhaps to locate enemy radio transmission locations for artillery requests, or supply crates. Perhaps a commander or a specops perhaps could "approximately" i.e. within a coordinate locate the source or the commander location if equipping the right "tool".

Personally i want to start seeing arty requests based on proper coordinates.

i.e. for those not versed in military matters of elevation and deflection, a coordinate system with a bit of map zoom perhaps would be better

and by the way most of the military GPS systems showing all the friendly troop locations, i heard are not used because of the **** lag and delay on refreshing the positions as they move.
