i really find that "feature" very annoying , i cant understand what they are saying . its ok for irrelevants things liket the generic "enemy forces spotted" or "get ammo" and "thanks" BUT for things like "i need a medic" or "enemy armor spotted" the text are very usefull . i dont know who is needing a medic , dont know who spott the tank , and (in case of mec/pla) don know what they spott
my suggestion that only show those mensages in the text:
-enemy tank/plane/boat/apc/movilAA/car/soldier/chooper spotted
-"need a medic/ammo/repairs"
-comanders orders (exect: you are the better/worst squad and "go squad go")
- maybe the roger/negative
-SL orders
and dont show those :
-generic enemy forces spoted
-thanks
-bailt out
-get in
-and more useless things
and maybe some tweak to the sound to avoid the radio spam , things like you only read the text of your squad mates or the persons near you .
(@ first post)I concur. We need to bring radio text back because not everyone understands what the heck those guys are screaming over the radio once you start playing any non english speaking force. Heck, I'm chinese and I hardly understand the **** EA passed off as mandarin in BF2.
Also, I'm not sure if the flashing icons were taken away too, since I haven't bothered to pay attention to radio messages at all ever since I stopped having the ability to comprehend them (or rather, the time spent trying to understand the radio spam some people put in on public servers would get you killed), but if they were, I think we should reinclude them...irl I'm sure armies have better means of comms than the same poorly sounding generic voice over the waves over and over again, and I'm sure that squads will begin to adapt to each other's voices after working with each other over long periods of time. The flashing icon could represent extended status reports of "where I am and what I see", which I think represents the more co-ordinated nature of irl radio chatter. Lets face it, trained soldiers arent just going to scream into his throat mic "OMGZ its a slick" or "OMGZ its a tank". I play senario ball and when I use my throat mic even I dont do **** like that. Its common sense.
Radio text being brought back would actually be realistic I think. Like I said, I'm chinese and even I dont understand the **** the PLA scream over the radio which the folks at EA thinks is mandarin...putting radio chatter text back on screen wont hurt PR, but rather aid it. Currently, the only way to comprehend radio chatter is turning all voice overs into english. And that greatly hurts the realism atmosphere. Considering you (the player) on the PLA or MEC or Insurgent teams are playing the role of a soldier of that organization's army, it should be assumed you are a fluent communicator in it too. Lets face it. not many countries recruit legions of foreign mercs. I believe the radio chatter text would be a good example of what is going through the soldier's mind when he hears the chatter over his comms headset. And, again, like i said, EA didnt exactly do a wonderful job with some of its foreign voice overs.
(@ second) Is this one of those things we could never have because of the dreaded word "hardcoded"?
Also, while it is true that irl, soldiers dont have cool little radar marks, but they are provided with a larger multitude of information. Note that the little magical mark that you wish to be rid of represents the real life counterpart of co-ordinate reporting. And face it, no matter how real a game gets, no one is going to extensively study the maps, mark down co-ordinates, and then report all this over voip all the time. Unless you wish to be rid of the entire slightly less than hardcore community, then its something that just cannot be done. The radio text is rather essential. Plus, the current spacing of the grids on the maps is too big for anything precise anyways. When I scrim with my clan in FH1, we used to have our own system where we subdivided each grid into further grids, to increase spotting accuracy, but again, keep in mind that this is something to be done for scrims, not casual games, because only in the perfect world will walk-ons actually do the things the way you like them to.
One more thing I'd like to add though...the ONLY problem that irritated me with VBF2 icons was when an enemy was spotted, his location for the next 30 seconds or so would be constantly updated....it would be more realistic if his initial spotted location remains on map, but if he moves, the icon should not trace him....kinda made it really pointless to perform any sort of escape and evade tactics once you suspect you've been spotted...

I was in a server today on the Chinese team and a teammate was standing infront of me yelling some thing in Chinese, I had no idea what. Turned out he needed ammo, as he told me in team chat. I think that any type of request support like should be shown in text. I know there are some people out there that will tell me to turn on the "English Only Voices" option. Well, that isn't very realistic now is it?
solution: if you need something from a squad member, TELL THEM ON VOIP!
If you need something from someone who is not in your squad, TYPE IT OUT!!!
bringing back radio text spam would only serve to bring back unwanted screen clutter and SPAM!!!! in the text area.
Right now, if you need something, you can type in the text area and people will actually be able to read it because there isnt 10 lines of 'Enemy Forces Spotted!'
The audio radio messages will be getting changed hopefully in v0.6, so that most of the radio chatter is in 1st person and NOT over the radio, giving less headaches to all involved
Yea but if it's typed then it could go unnoticed. Whereas, with the voice, it grabs their attention so they look over to the left to see what it is. Not everyone uses VoIP. I can't use it because it lags me down.
!
When you call for a medic, the medic's mini map blue dot changes to a red cross, same for ammo.
I'm pretty sure the person who is calling has their icon changed as well.
Tank spotted is simple, CapLock map and look where the red tank icon is.
If you don't see one the spot was no good.
If you call out, your blue dot blinks on the map.
Now when 7 people are calling out it does get confusing but that's the fog of war.
Please do not bring the text back !
And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.
I say either reinstate some text so we can understand whats going on or, preferably, cut voices and text out completely. This would force ppl to use voip and thus forcing them into joining a squad wich again reinforces teamwork (cut off from all communications is not attracktive, not even for Super Rambo + we could avoid the 20x of "enemy spottet" wich occurs everytime a n00b spots an enemy soldier). Leave in the spotting, medic and supply options but without text/voice. Only as a mini-map indicator for your teammates.

98% of the internet population has a Myspace. If you're part of the 2% that isn't an emo *******, copy and paste this into your sig.

I'm a pretty big fan of this idea; though you might alienate people who don't use VOIP.
But on a serious note, if it would kill off the lone wolves for good, it would most definetly be worth the minimal losses of those not using voip (in the serious PR world that is). Alternatively you could make it a server decision wether to implement the idea or not.

thank the devs!!!! i have been getting migranes from all the spotting in the team radio chat.
Î can't concentrate when some ones shouting "durka durka" before the previous one finishes. Especially when you really need to be quiet cause enemies are near.
If you are reading this dont stop, cause if you do, I'll kick you in the balls.
El_Vikingo wrote:What should be done is remove the radio spots, and leave the spots that you hear when someone is near you.
Hell, even remove it completely. Ireal life, soldiers dont have radars that mark the enemy!!
No... soldiers may not have instant radars, but the limitations in spatial awareness when playing a game needs to be compensated. So all taken into account I find the radar and spotting system is brilliant for promoting realistic squad play.
Forcing people to only use VoIP is the worst idea ever. I can't use it because of the lag that it causes, and I know others who can't get it to work at all, some people are so quiet you can barely hear them. The radio call outs are there for a reason, to improve teamwork. Why is it such a big deal to add in the text for "I need a medic", and "I need ammo"? It would promote teamwork because then people would know what is going on. As opposed to hear "quan chi zu chu mao" and wondering what the hell the guy wants. Then you start typing to ask what he wants, and someone runs around the corner and pops you because you are typing and defenseless.

im not saying back ALL the mensages , just the most important , and "in real life" soldiers dont use chat in the midle of the battle
'[R-DEV wrote:fuzzhead']Right now, if you need something, you can type in the text area and people will actually be able to read it because there isnt 10 lines of 'Enemy Forces Spotted!'
did you play on tactical/warishell/devfile ? NOBODY read the text , with or without the radio mensages , that would not going to change .

radio spam is annoying , text spam isnt .(IMO) is my only way to comunicate without confucions .
right now , after 4 closed spoted , you cant say anything for 30 sec
can you make that , after 2 spoteds , you are "banned" from the net for 5 seconds ? that would reduce the radio spam.
I want real shouting. Your VOIP relayed to everyone close to you as outgoing sound. You still have the squad radio button, just another button for shouting. It's probably very impossible and could be abused to no end. It would allow you to talk directly to anyone on the map, that happens to stand close to you.
