The M14 is a completely different rifle than the M1, though it was based on the M1. It was the main automatic rifle the US had before the M16 was introduced, I think.

M1 Carbine and M1 are completely different. The M14 is based on the latter, IIRC

nope, M14 is a M14. M1 carbine uses 7.62 x 33 mm ammo, while the M14 uses 7.62 × 51mm ammo. M14 is baisically a M1 grand with a 20 round magazine, while the M1 is a carbine verison of teh garand.

The M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, M14 family, and the Mini-14 all share a common type of rotating bolt, fixed-piston gas operating system If you look at one closely you can see clearly the way it decended from a bolt action rifle.

The Springfield M1A is the civilian version of the M14

The Mini-14 is a 5.56mm version of the M-14 made by Ruger and has never been used by the US military, though it is popular with some security forces (including some SWAT units) and was the favored weapon of the A-Team.

The A-Team is the reason I bought one! When I go to the range I fire it from the hip and make sure I hit everything but the target, just like my beloved A-Team. They started to use m16s in later episodes but it just wasnt the same

Isn't the ammo used by the M1 Carbine a pistol round? I've always wanted to buy the carbine -- just looks cool with folding stock.

No, in civilian terms it is a ".30 Carbine" and to the best of my knowlege there is no pistol that uses a 30carbine round. I have seen kits for M1 Carbines to convert them to various pistol rounds.

7.62X63 = .30-06cal
7.62X51 = .308cal

The AMT Automag III uses the .30 carbine round. Though the round was indeed designed only for the M1/M2/M3 carbines, the Automag only appeared much later.

Appropriate that the Automag came in 30cal., its on-paper performance was about equal to a 44mag (complaints about its ineffectivness probably stem from using ball ammo vs. hollow points), without all the issues that you had trying to find ammo for it (there were never any manufacturers of .44automag in the US) most owners had to produce their own ammo. I wonder if Dirty Harry was a reloader?
