This is kind a cool stuff imo. It simply visualizes basic formational knowledge.

Supplemented with other training stuff this could give a better understanding in formation thinking, whether these in game PR formations maybe wont be as pretty as the one we see pictured here.

Thx for the links.

Define irony. A bunch of guys playing PR year after year. A game teaching initiative as the prime mover.
However, in regard to EA, these guys never took the initiative.

As fun as it is trying to use tactics like that in PR, I don't find them that practical. Most of the maps in PR don't have enough open ground to constitute formations like that, and if they do, the squad is more likely to be use transport vehicles. Somethings more basic like having your squad spread out in a rough line (so the 203 will only kill one third of you opposed to half ;) ) seems to work better IMO.

If I have a competent enough squad I'll always try and get them to use squad formations as much as possible. When it works with a well disciplined squad it's truly a beautiful thing to behold (and VERY effective)! :)

Well if there was a large space (xx) meters between each squad member in the V formation, it could under specific circumstances be useful as a tool to win a fight.

Lets play that your the SL and your using the V formation with your Chinese squad moving from Government office straight east to pig farm on the Qwai River map.

You have decided to use the V formation in those fields because your excellent commander already had spotted out an enemy squad in column formation on your 12.

So you simply just try to position your V formation in such a way that the enemy column formation will hit the bottom of your V at some point.

And at a certain point the enemy column formation has now moved into your V and you then order everybody to nade the inner of the V or let the north side of the V (1 fire team) nade/grenade launch first so the enemy will face north. When the enemy does that your north fire team hit the dirt so your south fire team can move in for the close kill while you your self, positioned in the center (bottom of the V) gives suppressing fire on the enemy on you 12.

You know, a fast coordinated, solid communicated, tactical diciplined and furious kill. :2gunsfiri

And yes this is not something you just do next week without practice. (So join the squad leader training program:wink :)

Also, if being commander you can think in team sized V formations.

Its not the perfect pictured formation that’s interesting, but the way of thinking in formations as tools to win fights. Or just as tools to understanding fights.

God I wish I could get a platoon together to work like that, but the reality is that most players don't have the patience to wait for the squad to rally or help another player who needs a medic, never mind establish a formation and hold it.

Yep it does require practice just as in real life. But, I mean, for me…no problem, I will probably play PR in one year from now anyway, and so I have the patience.

All the good is still to come. We just need to get all the training programs designed and up running, then it will have an effect at some point.

I believe that when most of pr players have experienced good solid squad leaders and commanders for a couple of months, we will see project reality to be played on an everyday basis as the tactical game it is.

Maybe this would even cause an effect on how future maps are designed?

Speaking of tactics.... (figure no point starting another thread), I was thinking of a tactic that a commander could use by dedicating a squad, (maybe a couple spec-op, medic, rifleman, officer) and use them as a dedicated RP hunting team. Commander can try to get general locations of RPs (or blue cars), and this squad can dedicate themselves ot picking off RP's and rearming themselves.

Has anyone been involved in a squad like this? Does it work?

When I'm commander and I spot a Rallypoint/Spawncar I alway send a squad to it, most of the time they destroy it and return to attack or defense...

Man, using those tactics from SimHQ in a game like Operation Flashpoint would be so fun
