Lessons from reality.

Post by [-=IDSF=-]SykloAG »

Here is a video of Israeli troops fighting in the 2006 Lebanon conflict.

I suggest it be watched carefully - the subtitles are good if you don't understand Hebrew.

A couple of points from the movie:
  • Troops follow orders.
  • There is often confusion, panic and fear (this keeps things interesting).
  • There is no minimap.
  • Large amounts of covering fire.
  • When a terrorist dies he stays dead.
  • Nothing respawns.
  • Wounded soldiers need to be evacuated for treatment or they die.
  • Actions and movement are planned carefully.
  • Movement is slow, but fights go down fast.
  • Probably missed a few points ;-)
That was a real battle. I think it would be nice to see something like that in PR. I know there is the balancing of fun and reality, but fun is the antithesis of realism. War in a computer would be fun no matter how realistic - you don't feel any pain, don't die and you can come back and try again.

Things such as no respawn suck IMO and would wreck this game.

Going to take a look on that video. Sounds interessting.

Just need to note that some NATO forces does use mini map in the field.

And for those NATO forces that still don’t, it’s only a matter of money and/or time before they will. (NBO/CIS)

BTW: Do we have to create an account to watch the video?

Define irony. A bunch of guys playing PR year after year. A game teaching initiative as the prime mover.
However, in regard to EA, these guys never took the initiative.

Lol, they stick their GPS devices up against their heads?

But very good vid, i'd like to see people use those tactics, planning out movements, covering fire, but is there a way confusion adds to it? Aside from people freaking out on their end that is.

Thats sorta taking it too far imo. The original Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six games aimed at more realism and less fun, and they slowly got phased out and become console shooters. Operation Flashpoint was great, cept the engine was lacking in power so you could get sniped by a normal rifle before the computer controlled infantry was even rendered on your screen.

I still think this mod should be Battlefield 2, with more realism.. not some perfect realism war game (which is what ArmA is supposed to be).

Well some Israeli forces use something like a minimap also, but it does not show absolute [realtime] enemy locations (mostly). If NATO have that then they are quite some years ahead. Only way to do that would be for an update via a dedicated satellite for each 500m2.

I understand that the minimap is to make up for loss of situational awareness... Still, I think it should be toned down just a bit (it should not track an enemies movement after he is spotted at least).

Maybe you do need an account to watch the video.
Confusion is inevitable to a certain extent, especially at night when you cant see too well.

Well you know how it is, the stuff being allocated to ones unit today is already x and/or xx years behind the newest stuff.

Btw: Talking about satellites, some show of force demo, that China launched when they shut down one of their own satellites. Maybe a historical milestone?

Who knows what kind of effects that demo have had on all the research out there?

Us Brits already have the minimap to an extent. Even down to section level with BOWMAN the commander has a screen that fits in his map pocket, like a big PDA. It has a map, GPS, co-ords of other callsigns etc.
