I've never been banned for language, and only kicked by an autokicker. I also really hate how people refer to these fictional 12 year old CS players who ruin games for everbody--they don't really exist. Some of the most mature people I've played with are under the age of 15, mostly because they don't have this age-induced ego and false sense of moral superiority that so many older gamers take on. Age doesn't make you more mature, it's how you act, and frankly I'm sick of people underestimating younger gamers. 9/10 when I'm in a dispute in a PRMM server and someone wants to commit an ad-hominem to shift the fact that they're flat out wrong, they tell me I'm probably 12 and that I'm "immature".
Usage of a "curse" word does not make you immature, but flipping out because of their use, regardless of context, does.
Curse words add weight, emotion, and sillyness to speech. You don't have a 55 year old spinstress watching over you like you did in your algebra class, wake up and smell the coffee. Unless your grandmother happens to be watching you play, you shouldn't be ashamed of "bad language".
And Dylan, these forums are based upon the game, so only people playing the game (which like I said before would be rated 'M' by the ESRB because of the blood spatters that have been added in) should be here. Not little kids who aren't mature enough to play that sort of game - their parents shouldn't let them play it and the kids shouldn't be here in the first place.
The real problem comes when you have people over 17 who still aren't mature enough to handle swearing, and add in these 5th grade classroom rules which can stifle what should otherwise be a mature and enjoyable gaming experience.
Just because there's a risk that 1 player might just be a complete smaktard and abuse the lack of swear filters is no reason for a whole server running the equivalent of a "mature rated" video game to apply rules that only apply in gradeschool (and even then because parents can't teach their kids maturity, so they have to simulate it by punishing "vulgar" expressions).
To quote the great Frank Zappa: "They're just words."

Three pages in 15 minutes... Not bad... Now please lighten the mood here, this isn't a political discussion.
Oh and Sep, before you argue with me about swearing on THESE forums, by signing up here you abided by the rules we provided...

dude, i played UT99 when i was about 12 (which, if you dont know, is a game that had limbs blown off and people decapitated). i didnt really want my mom looking over my shoulder the whole time. some people are mature enough to see violence and not want to emulate it. as mature members of the PR community, we should look out for our younger players. most parents see video game violence as fantasy (as they should IMO) -- just like the game "risk". however, bad language is real no matter where its said. if its over the internet or on TV, its still the same thing -- someone is saying something that is offensive.sep wrote:Their parents should keep them away from a game that in all honestly should be rated mature aside from the fact that EA manages to walk the narrow line by not putting blood spatters in (a feature that PRMM adds).
i have an extremely dirty mouth, but i try and keep a lid on it when in game. sometimes i dont and slip up, but thats what the warning is for. no one's asking anyone to be a saint, just try to have a little self control.

Did I swear anywhere aside from what was already (automatically?) edited? In any case, I haven't recieved a warning for swearing, so please stop acting like I'm somehow breaking the rules in this discussion.
firestorm, I fail to see how words alone can be offensive aside from those that are racially charged due to social context. The "F" word (and I'm ashamed that this community is forcing me to refer to it in that manner) is in no way offensive in the majority of ways that it is used, and has plenty of synonyms that could replace it in every context. This FCC bull you've been fed since you were a kid about a word being bad without context is just that, bull.
I have no problem with administrators wanting to keep hateful language out of their servers, but that doesn't mean they need to shave off the more colorful words from our vocabulary. Swear words are often the most versitile and to the point words a person can use. If you can't handle hearing a single word, then you've got some serious problems.

We don't have automatic edits on the forums. I have been editing this entire thread since it began... And by the looks of it, I will be doing it a lot more unless it ends... This thread is walking the narrow line between existing and ceasing to exist.
You have been warned twice before actually... First page, and the top of this page contains my post with the link for the rules of this forum in which you abided by when you registered.

no, i didnt mean you were breaking the rules here. i was saying in game there are usually warnings that scroll at the top as well as warnings that appear at the top if you type a certain word.sep wrote:Did I swear anywhere aside from what was already (automatically?) edited? and the lack of vocabulary thing wasnt directed at you or anyone in particular, just a general statement. fo sho.

Oh, I figured my topic was auto-edited. In any case, that was one word. Putting the little asterix cluster in it's place doesn't really change anything in any case, just like bleeping--people still know what's going on there. If anything, it makes it more humorous. So I apologize (not really) for swearing once, these things happen, it looks like it's fine now.
I think you all completely misunderstood why MRGUMP posted like he did, I think he totally agrees with my point, and wanted to show the absurdity of some stances that people seem to have in this community. Like me, he is angry with how the community seems to want to overmoderate the way people communicate and play this game.
dementt - Words are simply a symbol for ideas and things, just like the killing in this game is symbolic.
Explain to me how a word can be considered "vulgar" regardless of the context it's in?
Explain to me how a word alone can be "vulgar"? A word is simple a selection of symbols that can be vocalized phonetically.

remember, You(plurle) have been warned.# Swearing
Remember that we have younger members in our community. Overuse of swear words will result in a warning. Further excessive use of adult language will result in further sanctions towards those concerned.

"# Respect

I hope you find your last two warnings as your final... One more and your gone. I am locking this before it gets even more out of line.
