Gameplay speed

Post by CaptRio »

OK guys, since I've just seen Rhino's statement in TotalBF2 that 0.6 will be mainly gameplay tweaks and changes, I've decide to bring this old topic back up.

I'd really like to see your opinions and maybe a couple of DEVs ones too.

Most of what you reference is not easily moddable.

I think one of the most significant problems with the current release of the mod is the number of servers with short spawn timers. Completely screws up the dynamic of the mod and we will not be supporting completely free form adjustments in future releases.

The current modded and short spawn servers are degenerating the game play and allowing players to use "tactics" that effectively make the mod a more deadly version of vanilla.

I think the problem with hitting strafing people is probably due to bad hitbox detection.

Whatever happend to that bad hitbox fix that someone posted a while ago? Have it been tested yet, and if so, does it work?

Don't get me started on CSS hitboxes.

EDIT: Wow, so that's why I suck at BF2! I wasn't sucking, I just wasn't exploiting hard enough...

As Egg has already stated, much of what you would like to see changed is not readily moddable.

Personally, I don't think PR is too fast paced. I'm a rusher, I love to take point. I play very aggressively and I die A LOT. If I run out into the open, I get gunned down really quickly.

When people rush my position, they get gunned down quickly too.

But even in real warfare speed and maneuvering is important.

So the game favors the slow and steady approach.

in alot os tactical shooters, you move so slow, even when your being shot at! its really annoying to have to 'tactical walk' everywhere. irl you move slowly because of fear, NOT because you cant move fast. like gaz said in the other thread, if some one was shooting at you with a 7.62 automatic rifle you would run fast as hell!

Although Neo doesn't bunnyhop, that would be dodging bullets.

Again part of the problem is that the mod has had the play style altered to meet the needs of players .. rather than the players getting frustrated with the long spawn timers and either: 1. leaving 2. adapting

Those two things are not happening as much as with prior releases because of the number of populated servers with reduced spawn timers. Not saying there aren't problems in the mod, but while we cant mod the players we can make the mod unappealing to those who dont want to mod themselves.

Eggman makes a solid point about the game engine not allowing a lot of things to be modded. My one and only question is this. Isn't there a way to adjust or slowdown the sprint, and walking speeds in game?

CaptRio is right, the player models move and run way to fast. Maybe if the player models moved at a more realistic speed the hit boxes would do a better job of keeping up, thus eliminating the problem. The game is modeling soldiers that are wearing a lot of gear and body armor. Not professional track and field stars like Carl Lewis. Yes soldiers are required to be fit and healthy, but for pete sake that are not track stars. Also lets not forget that they are in a combat enviroment, which means they are very tired already. They haven't had sleep for days possibly, and they are hungry cause MRE's ARE NOT a full course meal. Also lets not forget about combat stress. Even track stars like Carl Lewis would be dragging *** after a day in combat. Again, can't something be done about this unrealistic sprint and run speeds?

Yes I know the maps are very, very large and it would take all day to walk to the battle but that's reality. Light Infantry troops operate on their IPCs. IPC = Infantry Personell Carriers. Their feet and legs if you still haven't figured it out.

Even Mechanized Infantry soldiers walk a lot, but Light Infantry is the king of walking. At least that's how it was when I was in, and I don't think that's changed. Just my 2 cents worth.

yeah there are some adjustments we can make to sprint and walking speed. unfortunately I haven't figured out how to adjust movement speed with sights raised nor movement speed while crouched.

I'm not sure how far off the sprint speed actually is. I am in a light infantry unit and I can tell you we can sprint with full gear on for more than 30 feet lol. Granted that is more of a jab at the unrealistically short sprint stamina. Which I would guess is in place due to the scale of the battlefield. Speed however I don't think is too far off.

That's cool, I'm glad to see that you guys are looking into it. I'd say the slower the better for aiming speeds. Aiming is hard enough when being still, much less when trying to move about. So when moving while aimed/zoomed in I'd say it should be really slow so you can mantain a good sight picture and sight alignment. On the crouch thingy, is there a way to make it toggle on and off? I hate holding down the crouch button, as I always prefer to crouch when there is something to get behind.

Oh, one more thing while I have your attention Egg. Thanks to you and all the DEVs and testers for the hard work you guys have put into this thing.
