Commander Speak

Post by SevenOfDiamonds »

Its something alot of people do and alot of people don't, but when your talking to the commander as an SL your dropping communication with your squad. Sure people say don't listen to the commander when he isn't talking to you, but what if you can't talkover him? One round we had a commander who talked so much (not neccessarily to our squad) that it cut the communication from the members to the SL because he couldn't hear us. I have heard that you can talk to certain squads but so far I do not know if people use it (if its there).

So Commanders, you might have over all control on the battlefield but your SL are running the people on the ground and they need to heard ... so shut up alittle.

(and for all of you wo are going to take this overboard i said ALITTLE, im not asking them to mute themselfs)

Or use B to talk to one squad instead of V to talk to everyone at the same time

If im Commander i speak as much as the sql talk to me because i really hate it myself when i got like 10 000 dif voices going in my headset.

So i try to keep it simple and to the point "Enemys there" "Arty needed there" and so on....

yeah, thats one thing i cant stand. the commander should spot before he speaks. i've had people sneak up on my while im listening to a commander. it sucks. i've also told commanders to shut the hell up a few times haha, but that was a lapse in judgment.

I would rather my commander talk as much as possible. There was a commander last night in a game I was playing (Jupiter I think was his nick, on Devfile) and I loved him. Unfortuately we had a few idiots that decided to take over the Cobras and A10s and decided to not follow orders and kill friendlies. We still pulled out the victory because of a few good infantry squads.

I tend to type out my messages so I don't cut squad communications. But if there is something needs immediate attention, like a tank flanking a squad that they haven't seemed to noticed, I'll hit the comm button.

Hmmm....

I think that overactive talker may have been me. I'll try out this "B" thing instead of V to see if I can get it to work .

If it does it will make my job a hell of a lot easier.

Just one thing, can I talk to two squads at once? Or is it just one squad or all squads?

Some commanders down know that they can talk to a individual squad. So when they start talking with one squad and directing them it becomes annoying and confusing. Commander gets enthusiastic and screams "watch out behind you", or "to you left", "now theres one coming from your right" etc. All the while I'm on the other side of the map getting dizzy from spinning around looking for those enemies.
WikiQuide wrote:By pressing the commander chat key (default V), you will talk to all squad leaders at once. If you highlight a squad or several squads by holding control and clicking the squads, and then use the Squad Talk key (default B), you will talk with just those squads. Battlefield information for one squad may not be necessary for other squads. Be sure to talk to all squads when necessary and only selected squads when necessary.
Hope that helps at least one of you :)

That single-squad only does not work for me. I've tried it, and it just doesn't. I have squad-VOIP push-to-talk mapped to caps-lock. So it should just talk to the squad I have highlighted when I hit caps-lock, no? But it doesn't. It doesn't talk to anybody.

Honestly what I hate is that in almost every case, when 5 people start talking at once and you say "whoa, radio silence guys. Squad 2, go ahead," they all start talking again.

Chatty Commander? Not helping you out at all and just chatting about the new soap brand he bought? Simple Solution: Press and hold TAB, right click. From here you have a cursor, now click on Manage button, and you can mute the commanders mic. Before muting, just give a commander a simple heads up "Commander this is Squad 2, I am muting you. If you need me somewhere, give me a move marker, Squad 2 Out."

Argh, that could have been me... I have no idea what was happening to my mic, it's never happened before and never happened since that round. I am familiar with how to talk to one squad at a time now though, so I do that. I know it's frustrating when you get maybe 3 squad members and the commander giving you info at the same time but hopefully as budding commanders get used to the controls available to them (more to come in 0.6! YAY!) It will work out as having a co-ordinated, aware and co-operative team.

I'm still trying to balance between too much info and too little. I believe squads should be aware of what other squads are doing so we don't end up with mass rushes of all squads to 1 particular flag. I like it when I can get the squads to trust each other to do their individual jobs and work together when required. There's no doubt communication is the key, it's just a matter of balance so it doesn't end up as a handicap.

@Red Hallibut - You can talk to say just 2 or 3 squads by holding down left control and then selecting the required squad bars with your mouse.

Yeah, that is really great info. That can really help out with the .6 C.O (More active C.O.).

Here is how it works.

1. C.O. is with the Defense element (one to two squads) and active (not in commander screen)

2. C.O. tells other squads and teams to mute his channel.

3. Everytime he pushes the default C.O. Voip button, only the one or two Defense Squad leaders will hear them. This will allow the other five or six squads to have clearer net channel.

___

Question: Can the SL who muted the C.O. mic, still talk to the C.O.? but the CO. can't talk to him?
This will allow the Assault team leader to get on the C.O. channel. Sort of like whisper set up.

Also, will the C.O. know what SL muted them by looking at their commander screen?
___

Best way to communicate is to do things realistically.

1. When you open the Channel, Tell your responsiblity and ask for a copy.

C.O.: Squad one, this is the C.O., do you copy,?
IF the SL copies, they will either respond in VOip, or press page up.
If they press page up, ask if they have VOip. Wait for page up or page down.

Go from there.

Same for the SL: Get a radio check with the person on the other line.

The best tip when trying to communicate is to wait and see if the other person is ready.

SL are talking to up to five other peopel. C.O. can be talking to up to 8 other people. Comms become dysfunctional when you do not wait to get a confirmation if they are ready to recieve your transmissions.

__
In conclusion, EA did make a pretty good Voip set-up for BF2. Good for us.

I guess the commander has an over ride button or soemthing because he was able to remove the "mute" our SL put on him, so that isn't much help...
