New to PR..any guides!?

Post by DirtyRat »

Well I just TRIED to play my first bout of PR and find it incredibly frustrating.

I come from a background of realistic FPS mod such as PRM for MOHAA, CoD, and then onto Red Orchestra...but I find getting assigned "Crew" status incredibly awkward...I have NO idea what vehicles I can enter/use, and it seems even when I have crew status I spawn in an APC only to die because I cant use it or something...?

I am a Voice Director for games, i work in the game industry and I feel the UI needs a bit more work to explain to new gamers just what we can expect. I also felt the voice command system though modified from BF2 is worse for it...perhaps this is me being over critical, but by adding additional FX to the original audio it just sounds worse.

Great mod overall though I really enjoy it when I am not getting frustrated!

Me too, I did not like the manipulated radio commands when i first played the mod. But it now i prefer it over the original ones...

And if you have questions about the gameplay, just join a squad and ask them via voip. I did it like this (after reading most of the manual) and mostly found a helping hand.

Firstly, Hi.

Secondly, maybe it's just me, but I read the entire guide, watched the demo vids and
everything before I even started the 1.6 gig download for this, just to get a feel of whether I would like it (and for some reason it was the getting into the APC via the door that sold it) and as a result had no probs with the specialised kits.
I'm just surprised that so many people ask this - not a critisism, but just self reflection and maybe I'm odd.

You can say that again! If I could get to play PR for 3 maybe 4 hours a week I would be most happy. I got 2 kids, wife, fulltime job, and other hobbies like flying, skydiving, etc, etc..... Can't really master a game unless you put in the time right.

When you learn the ropes, we'll see :) When your nuts drop call us... Just kiddin ya.

If I see ya online, we'll link up and I'll show ya what I know. Which will only take about 1 minute cause I don't know squat, and I've been playing since the prmm 0.3x days.

I think after watching the video guides I feel rather silly from not seeing these earlier...BUT I do think I am above the "average" gamer who will lose interest much quicker than me, and I think a tutorial for PR mod like the normal BF would be really appreciated for a new player i.e. IN GAME...

As I said I am a voice director, so if you need a new tutorial voice recorded I can certainly help (worked on Joint Task Force, Mafia, Timesplitters 2, GTA etc. to name a few I can actually mention).

I think the mod is great, just needs some polishing to make it easier for beginners to learn in game.

About the crewman, you don't get a "status", you get a kit. When you request it, you should pickup the kit that automatically spawn at your feet. Once you have the kit you can use the limited vehicle positions.

If you die, you must respawn and get the kit again.

I had NO idea about that until i saw the video lol

I requested the kit and got it, so thought that was it...this kind of thing if was explained IN GAME via a voiceover would make things much easier for new players

This is 'only' a mod though. Not sure how much significant in game tinker can be done to add something like a full blown tutorial. COuld always bring it up in the Suggestions Thread though. As an alternative, maybe someone could spend the time to make a more advanced tutorial vid instead and host it here.

Yeah hehe, but we have limited resources. Additionally lots of what we are trying was never really intended to be done within the BF2 engine, so some aspects of the mod has usability issues.

So we tend to focus on more gritty features that will appease the harcore gamers and rely on the wiki to provide the player guide.

ye we are trying to do it but as your problay know, alot of the stuff is hard coded into the engine so its kinda hard to do all that we want to do.

For real.

Otherwise, just try to play in squads and always take that extra bit of time to aim for the headshot. As an experienced simFPS player, I'm sure you already know most of what I can tell you, but good luck.

BTW, you have to be in an vehicle operator's squad to work the controls as a crewman, excluding light vehicles (which you don't have to be a crewman for either).
