Helicopter HUD request

Post by DarkTalon »

This is a fairly simple request, what I want is a rangfinder on all of the helicopters, this can help in spotting, targeting or even engaging ground units.
but most of all for flying, take night flying for example

Is that hill 20m away or 100m? even with night vision you can't tell how far away some objects/terrain are, especially objects without reference points such as windows or doors. I think the best place to put the rangefinder would be right below the crosshair since thats the spot you're looking at most, especially if it's an attack helo.

I don't think this would be hard to implement, and not only is it realistic it will save alot of guesswork.
Thanks!

Seems reasonable enough.

Well, night flying in PR should be difficult, especially since it is in real life.

Just my opinion

There used to be... then they got rid of 'em

BF2 does not support dynamic light sources. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. does though so I think more games will incorporate moving light sources.

what are the A-10 strobes? obviously they don't act as a light source and illuminate the ground or anything.. but that sucks the engine doesn't support it :/ hopefully a new engine comes along in the future! :)

The Doom 3 engine has dynamic lighting and the Crysis engine-which looks phenomenal-will do.

Night maps will probably return, maybe as early as v0.6

but TRUE night maps is what PR is after. The earlier nightmaps made everyone (players & vehicles & buildings) glow, which sucked

back on topic, the rangefinder is useful even in daytime situations, and if the rotor wash is added it would greatly assist pilots in close quarters landings. since the dust would be so intense.

can't you use the altitude for some of it. I mean with building and whatnot i understand but as said above it should be difficult.

sure, that covers the Y-axis, but in an L shaped street and when you're under fire, inserting troops, and watching for RPGs, you need to know if you're going to slam into a building the moment you dust off. of course in .5 this isent much of a problem, but if they add in rotor wash this will have a huge impact on some transport pilots, they'll have to rely on on HUD info more than what they see.

here's an example.

This suggestion seems reasonable enough, and with all the electronics in modern helicopters today, it seems realistic enough. Also, it shouldn't be to hard to implement.

I believe that the rangefinder has to hit a static object or vehicle, and not terrain in order to give a distance.

I thought the APC rangefinder would give a reading off of the terrain?
