Tank "clock" (correct term??)

Post by causticbeat »

in RO there is a tank "clock" layout for all to see, and the animation of the gun goes with it.

Image

(ah the beauties of the RO tank hud)

at the bottom left. Its great help. It would be excellent in PR for a tank driver to be able to say "Roof, 2 oclock" or something like "in the grass, 11 o clock" like you can in RO.

Just add it to the Bf2 equivalent of the icon in red orchestra, that thing that shows the turrent orientation. That way its standardized vy having the gun orientation show on the clock so you know when youre correct, and is there for everyone to see and be conscious of. Sometimes ive seen players get confused about what "12 oclock" is (is it north? is it 12 from my orientation? is it 12 from where the driver is? etc etc)

All that has to be done is add a new texture with a "clock" to the tank we already have at the bottom of the screen. Correct?

er.. but... dont ya think it's pretty easy to remember front is 12, right is 3, back is 6, left is 9 ???

I tend to want to focus on stuff that makes as much bang for the buck as we can get...

Yeah, but it could come in handy when your playing with someone who doesnt, and when youre in a city getting shot at by RPGs on the roofs, it could help.

Would be nice, and if it ended up being as simple as retexturing it couldnt hurt.

I'd like to see it become common knowledge but I don't want anymore stuff on the screen.

Off -Topic, because this "clock" thread reminded of something else.
Is it possible to have a timer on every server even if it's set for 30hr per round ?
I would like a clock in the game to synchronize actions with other players and the timer works well for this.
Maistros used it when trying to get the jets to take off at the same time for his movie and the idea has been in the back of my head since then.
OFP had an actual watch on the map screen but I don't know if this is possible with BF2 and it's too low a priority anyway.
I think having a time reference available to everyone could help in planning and execution of more complex maneuvers.
And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.

I think it could help.

I think, like eggman said, it should be common sense what exactly is "12 oclock" - and if one person doesn't know there's communication problems between the driver and gunner (reminds me of Lethal Weapon and whether it's 1.2.3 and THEN go...or go on 3).
Upon saying that, the HUD is pwetty, and looks cool - but the true benefit of it, imo, is if you could get the icon in the bottom left to show the current turrent orientation (think you hinted upon that). That way the driver would know exactly where the gunner is looking and alert him to something if he's pointing the wrong way.

If 12 is for the driver is the front of the tank, and 12 for the gunner is infront of the barrel, it can be a problem.

that could get tricky yea , or you should start shouting, like this,

north east(north being the front of the tank), 8 aclock in the sand
but that doest clear stuff up does it?

clock face designations are "in the direction of general advance or movement" they aren't set in terms of compass direction.

So your SL decides that "over there is the direction of movement and advance", then that is your 12 o clock position.

In tanks the clock face is fixed to the tank's hull. That is, 12 o'clock is always on the hull front, regardless of where the turret or commander's sight point. The problem is that there are players who don't know this, and thus confuse the clock directions.
