But... when the enemy shoots down a friendly and takes his gps, he knows where the rest of the friendlies are... Eerrrrrrmmm....Chaka wrote:Real life soldiers todays may not have a mini map but I'm sure they will within 10 years. Today they have a GPS system in vehicles which shows the location of other friendlies. I'm sure soon enough this will be adapted into a wristwatch type screen and ever solider will emit a GPS signal which will show up on this personal GPS wristwatch. So I don't see why everyone see it as being so unrealistic. This game is just set in 2012 when all soldiers will carry mini-maps as standard equipment.

Hope to see it gone
Excellent response Fuzzhead, you have me sold. Hope to see it removed ASAP. I will not complain one iota. All those that whine can go play CS or Quake.'[R-DEV wrote:fuzzhead']It's a real-time-shoot-first-think-later radar. It DOE NOT encourage communication or cohesion, it encourages lone wolfing and carelessness.
Aircraft should still have something though.
Btw, regarding maps, here are some pics from the mapping system used by the Merkava 4 MBT. Notice, no realtime enemy positions...

It's nice that we have two different polls.Engineer wrote:Minimap as it is now is a joke, a vanilla left-over. The compromise I gave was to remove minimap from all units except from Officers and Pilots.
Those who haven't noticed the official minimap-thread, here is the link.

But a soldier isn't going to be running around with the GPS in his eye all day.Chaka wrote:Real life soldiers todays may not have a mini map but I'm sure they will within 10 years. Positional awareness in reality is a lot better than ingame.
In PC games, you have a monitor, not even half your field of view. Its very narrow, its only two dimensional. There is no real depth.
In reality, enemies are life sized. In the game, they are tiny.
While, in theory, I agree, because having a map is unrealistic and ugly. But in practice I disagree. It should stay. The reason is that the map is a compromise for things that cannot be replicated in a game. Its a MUST HAVE for directional awareness.
But if you guys really think it'll make the game better, go for it, vote for it. And when you get team killed over and over because the screen is too small, you only have yourself to blame, no minimap means more teamkills.
I don't mind walking around and popping open the regular map. But it would increase teamkills tenfold. It would also screw over pilots and make the teamwork of "spotting" absolutely useless.

Mini Map should stay because it simulates awareness as someone a few posts above has stated.
In real life a commander knows where all of his troops are and can pass that down the chain of command. There is also a computer system being made available to the boots on the ground that allows everyone to know where everyone is. Hell it almost looks like the minimap in that you can see where assests and troops are.
Another thing to think about is since this technology is currently available, what makes you think that 10-15 years in the future it will not be miniturized to the point that every soldier will have a gps screen similar to the minimap? This game is set in the near future, seems reasonable to me. This thread should be deleted.

You would still be able to access the minimap information. Just hit 'M' or Caps Lock. It doesn't need to be obscuring your FOV at all times.Determined wrote: Another thing to think about is since this technology is currently available, what makes you think that 10-15 years in the future it will not be miniturized to the point that every soldier will have a gps screen similar to the minimap? It does not obscure mine at all. If that is the issue then simply make it an option to disable it. Hey, can't you make it almost totally transparent anyway?{GD}StevenGarcia wrote:You would still be able to access the minimap information. Just hit 'M' or Caps Lock.
